MitchW Posted June 27, 2025 Posted June 27, 2025 (edited) Is it possible that Eater is getting worse? To whit (from their "Best Pizza"): Quote Lucia Pizza of Soho Open for: Lunch and dinner. Price range: $$$ Lucia Pizza started as a slice shop in Sheepshead Bay, where it caught the attention of pizza fans and food critics. The second location, in Soho, is just as good and a third just opened this month on the Lower East Side. Try the specialty slices, too: The cream of spinach slice is inspired by the famous steakhouse Peter Luger and the recipe for its vodka slice is a family recipe from owner Salvatore Carlino. There’s a small counter for standing, but most people eat their pizza on paper plates out front. There’s a third location in the Upper West Side. First they write that a third location opened on the lower east side. Then they write a third location is on the upper west side. In the same paragraph. I guess what they don't really know is that the third location is, as Lucia's web site notes: Quote Upper East Side Location: Address: 1571 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10128 On the fucking upper east side! Why I even bother to read this shit is beyond me. Edited June 27, 2025 by MitchW 1 Quote
backyardchef Posted June 27, 2025 Posted June 27, 2025 Layout is worse than ever, too. At least they still have Sietsema. 😬 Quote
Wilfrid Posted June 27, 2025 Posted June 27, 2025 I remember them letting him go. Need to check (like who checks Eater any more?). Quote
rozrapp Posted June 28, 2025 Posted June 28, 2025 Sietsema was let go from Eater in December 2024. He now has a Substack newsletter, “Robert Sietsema’s New York.” Quote

Wilfrid Posted September 28, 2025 Posted September 28, 2025 Eater has a print edition out for the 20th anniversary. It's a look back over twenty years. National Eater, not just New York. Some interesting memories sparked. Quote
mongo Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 eater has also just done another big round of layoffs. to celebrate the 20th anniversary, i guess. Quote
Wilfrid Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 Right, it seems to be celebrating something that is gone. Quote
Anthony Bonner Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 It never made sense the price Vox paid for the Curbed/Eater empire. I remember an argument that part of the value of the deal was the CMS. So it is with much amusement to see Eater move to an off the shelf solution. Quote
Wilfrid Posted September 29, 2025 Posted September 29, 2025 I made the mistake of looking at Eater. Maybe worth saying where "the original" is, especially if you're going to list open and closed "branches." Quote EV Grieve reports that the East Village location of Corner Bistro (94 Avenue A, at East Sixth Street) opens today, Monday, September 29, at 11 a.m. The menu echoes the original with its burger and brunch standards, along with a handful of new dishes like meatloaf, onion rings, baked French toast, the site reports. The original restaurant opened in the early 1960s and touts itself as “one of the last bohemian bars” in the neighborhood. The burger is still under $20, one of the few around. The outpost will be open until midnight, with later hours in the future. In 2015, owner Elizabeth McGrath took over the original from her parents, Bill O’Donnell and Lorraine O’Donnell. Corner Bistro had branches in Long Island City and within food halls Gotham West Market and the North 3rd Street Market, both of which have since closed. Eater has reached out for more information. small h Posted December 3, 2025 Posted December 3, 2025 I mourn Tortaria. This does not look like an adequate replacement. 6 hours ago, Wilfrid said: Good. Hopefully there's a restroom too. Oh, just pee in the communal sink, why are you so fussy. Quote
Wilfrid Posted December 4, 2025 Posted December 4, 2025 I just imagine fighting for the soap. Only memory I have of a communal sink in the dining room is a backstreet place in Kuala Lumpur where you were eating with your hands (roll up the rice ball) and where they pretended they couldn't serve me the goat intestines, presumably because I looked nothing like any of their customers ever. Tortaria had a good run, I thought. Quote
