Fried Chicken: the thread

Recommended Posts

I think we can treat this the same way we treat burgers and pizza. So many contenders coming along.

Anyway, the Hill Country effort and The Commodore reviewed at the Pink Pig. As far as the food on your plate goes, The Commodore was a winner. Really good, from the chicken to the beans to the biscuits.

This is like Wilfrid's complaint that the universally acclaimed and imitated Ssäm bar buns were twelvety times more expensive than the gnarly things sold under the Manhattan bridge.  That $13 bee

Mitchell's on Vanderbilt Ave in Brooklyn, is my favorite chicken in NY, outside of my house.. We did the sous vide before fry at home many moons ago, when we had a kitchen.. :(

People talk about Blue Ribbon's chicken like it is so amazing.. I thought it was pretty good..

I have heard many people in recent time speak of Brooklyn Bowl's Fried Chicken with the same enthusiasm.. I wonder if it's the same recipe.

No 7 makes a really lovely fried chicken sandwich for brunch.

The problem with threads like these is that all of the discussions of particular restaurants getting muddled about in here. Makes it hard to search for restaurant ideas. In addition to posting here, it would be helpful if you all would start a thread for whatever restaurant you're discussing and include the material there as well.

The hot chicken sandwich at the Commodore is wonderful. Big too. When the server dropped it on the table I said "I didn't know that they made chickens this big." The first picture is awful but it will give those of you scoring at home an idea of the sheer heft of this monster.

The sandwich comes in two versions - hot and mild. The hot sandwich had a satisfying level of spiciness without being overwhelming. I'll bet the mild version is just as good.

The pork and pinto beans were excellent - I'd gladly order them again. The fries were decent, nothing more.

The Commodore also sells burgers which are supposed to be good. The thing is, there are lots of places that sell good burgers but damn few that sell great chicken sandwiches. I want that sandwich again.

I am quite happy to triple-post links to the Pink Pig. I thought others might find it tiresome.

(Actually I find these threads useful because - especially with burger and pizza places - there are so many I can't remember their names.)

I was at a benefit last night called Harvest in the Square where local (roughly local to the Union Square area) restaurants served up samples of their wares. Including terrific stuff from Aldea, Tamarind, Craft, Back Forty, Tocqueville, ABC Kitchen. Now the bad news. Hill Country fried chicken, described by my companion (I abstained, preferring to leave room for other goodies) as 'weird, dry, the worst thing I tasted all night'.
