Before Pop Videos were Good

Recommended Posts

A thousand years ago, I watched a mini-documentary about the early days of music videos, pre-MTV, when they were little seen except by industry folk. One of the crusty old guys who had directed about a million of them offered this bit of wisdom: "If you don't know what to put in there, just go with a horse walking through the mist. Works for everything." Wise words.

Streaming Killed the Video Stars.

And you have to mention some of the Beach Boys' ones, which as you'd expect aren't exactly good but are endearingly goofy:  "Good Vibrations" and "Friends" and "Sloop John B".

There are a lot of great pre-MTV music videos.  All the Beatles ones (my faves are the ones for two great two-sided singles, "Hey Jude" and "Revolution" and "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever").  There's the Small Faces' one for "Lazy Sunday".  There's one Traffic did for "Paper Sun".  There are the ones the Stones did for "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby (Standing in the Shadows)" and "Jumping Jack  Flash" (Face-Painting Version) and "We Love You" and "Child of the Moon" (feat. Eileen Atkins!!!!!!).  The Who's for "Call Me Lightning".

And, although it's not pre-MTV, what to me is the greatest of all music videos, which didn't get played on MTV:  Les Rita Mitsouko's "Marcia Baila".

it's depressing to think how much ground was covered in music video making from, say, 1955 to 1980, and how little since.

How Music Videos Stopped

(sorry for the late response, but see in 2010 I wouldn't have known to make that remark)

um, that was an ironic comment on the other thread.
