I love Old '97s. They always put on a great show.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to see The Wombats later this week at Brooklyn Steel. Anyone want to go with me?

I've limited myself to certain shows at Brooklyn Steel. Patti's end of year stuff. I've seen EC once (I think). And I saw Wet Leg (for the 2nd time) during which I wanted to jump off a cliff. Thankfully, I'd seen Wet Leg at the tiny Baby's All Right on their first time in NYC, where they were great.

The sight-lines are bad. The sound isn't great. The bars are in weird places making it inconvenient to get a drink. I feel about it much the way I feel about Terminal 5. But it does fill up, so obviously my opinion is not widely shared.

And it's usually full of mooks.

Japanese Breakfast at Radio City. They did all the hits first, which may have been a mistake, but they still put on a lively show with a lot of positive energy. One of their encores was The Only Living Boy in New York, which I was not expecting.

An aside: I love the crowds at Radio City - so chill! so fashionable! And the staff is super nice. I take my cane with me when I go out, mostly just to warn people to give me some damn room, and I was pulled out of the entrance line and whisked into the building.

So I've seen My Morning Jacket a ton and their shows are almost always great. I was in NYC yesterday and got a last minute ticket for their show at the Beacon. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of "it still moves." They played the album in order then a bunch of other songs. All I'll say is it was extraordinary. The band never phones it in but I've never seen them so on fire like last night.

Another good thing about MMJ shows is they usually have relatively unknown openers who are a bit out of the box but excellent. Last night was Madi Diaz who did not disappoint. She is not shy with her lyrics. I’ll leave it at that. Check her out.

Good week of music continues. North Mississippi Allstars, now with Joey Williams of The Blind Boys of Alabama on bass. Close to 3 hours of greasy, swampy blues without a break. I’m glad they started on time at 8pm sharp!

I was around 10 ft from Luther Dickinson and being so close I still have no idea how he does what he does playing guitar. He is beyond masterful. And brother Cody is an underrated drummer.  Great show and I felt like a thief seeing this in a small venue for $38.

Next up: U2 at The Sphere in Las Vegas. The opposite of the NMA experience.

Well, New Yorkers, on Thursday, October 26 you have the opportunity to hear Jorja Smith promoting her second album "Falling or Flying" at the Apollo Theatre before she's off to the UK.  https://www.amazon.com/falling-flying-Jorja-Smith/dp/B0C5J9WG31/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2I6V3M6Y13IOM&keywords=jorja+smith&qid=1698220409&sprefix=%2Caps%2C147&sr=8-1  I saw her on Tuesday the 24th at the Ace Hotel in LA.  Her songs are good although the sound mix was muddy and bass heavy in the first half of the show. In the latter portion the fans all sang along with the music from her first record.  She did a brief duet from the new album with her opening act, Lila Ike.  Ms. Ike has a reggae tinged approach and a clear as a bell voice.  Someone to watch.
