We had to cancel an earlier planned visit to the Blue Note for Robtober and the club was gracious enough to substitute tickets for last night’s sold out show with Glasper’s regular band and D Smoke.  Another night of Glasper’s unique jazzy hip hop. I don’t know what it is but jazz piano backing rap gets me every time.

D Smoke is a very engaging entertainer. Nothing really “wow” on the music side but fun night as usual at  Glasper residency show.

Melissa Errico on Friday at 54 Below. Almost 20 years since I first saw her, talking of old.

I remember the first time I spoke to her after a set at the Oak Room. I told my wife about it, including the detail that she enthusiastically grabbed both my wrists.

Wife: "Self defense."

U2 at The Sphere in Las Vegas. Words cannot describe what this show is like. It’s beyond spectacle. Note that while I like U2 I can’t say I’m a fan. I never play their music at home and never saw them in concert before tonight. The show is remarkable. The band was excellent. Rumors of Bono no longer being able to sing are not true. and he covered Lou Reed! They have a pretty good guitar player too. 😵
Now to The Sphere. While The outside is amazing it is dwarfed by the inside. Built by James Dolan, this was the venue people could not wait to hate. But the sound is as close to perfect as I’ve ever experienced. The effects on the screen are mind blowing. I purposefully did not take an edible before the show as I did not want my judgment skewed. Does it distract from the music? I’d say no, at least with U2 it didn’t.
Some comments from friends after the show:

”I don’t know if I can go to a regular concert again”

”This is the only show that I’d be willing to fly across the country to see.”

Yes, I would recommend getting on a plane and seeing this before the residency ends in February. It is that good.

Melissa was as compelling as ever and if anything her between-song patter was funnier.

Special guest for a lengthy medley, 95 year old Marilyn Maye.

The set was mainly Broadway songs from a range of eras: the highlight, “The Man I Love” (dedicated to her parents in the front row) followed by her complex take on “Windmills of my Mind”.

I have more to say, but easier typed when I am off this 6 train.

What I wanted to add, in response to conversations with @Sneakeater @MitchW and others: I have very recently been transfixed by some of Henry Taylor’s paintings at the Whitney and by (my advance copy of) Fosse’s A Shining. My aesthetic and emotional response to Melissa’s “The Man I Loved” (her father snared her mother by playing it) is not on a different or lower level.

You can prefer Kerry James Marshall to Taylor, you can prefer Beckett to Fosse, you can perhaps prefer someone to Gershwin or like a performer more than Melissa.

But these are treasured aesthetic experiences we are so grateful for and not to be ranked as “high” or “low.”

I'm going to guess Radio City Music Hall. They've been upping their live music game.

I think they need a place with general admission, or at least some standing area in front of seats.

Lest we forget another of my least faves - Webster Hall.

Music Hall of Williamsburg was a perfect place to see them but they easily sold it out. Maybe they will indeed move up in size.

I would worry about getting a ticket, but since I see their every move on Instagram I should be good.

I've come to learn, after decades of shows, that nothing in NYC is ever truly sold out. Or to put it another way, one can always get a ticket.

Michael played Hedwig in the stage production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. And many other roles throughout his illustrious career. Something about singing a Bowie song really brings out the greatness in these people.
