Oh man, Black Pumas at the Wiltern Friday night.  Just amazingly soulful.

Opener was Reverend Baron who came off in solo format with some taped accompaniment as a very low key Chris Isaak.

This tight lineup of the band includes the two principals, two drummers, a keyboard player, a bassist and two dynamite backup singers.

This was essentially the setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/black-pumas/2024/fox-theater-oakland-ca-bac6596.html with "Dock of the Bay" subbed for "Angel" in the encores.

Lighting was very coordinated to the songs. Really on point.

All in all the Pumas provided 90 minutes of great music.  In a proper world these folks would be playing the Super Bowl.

Last night, celebrating the 30th Anniversary of The Wheel...

From our not favored seats, Rosanne Cash.

The Wheel's song reverted back to Rosanne after a mere 30 years, and she's calling this tour Reinventing the Wheel...

She did tell a funny story about her dad advising her about becoming a "country" singer.  He gave her a list of songs she ought to know in order to help her achieve that goal; the list had 100 songs on it...she was like 7 years old.

4 weeks to go for Jazzfest and the music schedule came out today. Where should I plant my ass over 8 days of music: https://www.nojazzfest.com/downloads/2024-nojhf-8day-cubes.pdf

And what should I eat? https://www.nojazzfest.com/food/

My two faves are Crawfish Strudel and the Cochon de Lait Poboy.

In honor of Freedom Day and the 30th anniversary of South Africa's first free elections, SF Jazz brought several South African musicians to town.  On Saturday night, we saw singer Melanie Scholtz and pianist Aaron Rimbui perform a tribute to Miriam Makeba.  Scholtz has a terrific voice and stage presence, and did Mama Africa proud.  Yesterday was one of the legends of SA jazz, saxophonist McCoy Mrubata.  N knew his music quite well, and I really enjoyed his playing plus that of his guitarist (who had a 7-string guitar--never seen one of those before).

Really wanted to go to that @MitchW as I have an unyielding love of this artist. How was it?

It was really great, and even the interviewer (the SNL guy) was good.

In case anyone needs to know my cool Nick Lowe story, I saw him and Dave Edmunds at an industry party pick up acoustic guitars and sing a set of Everly Brothers songs.

I also saw Rockpile a bunch of times of course.

Me too (Rockpile). Nick did talk a little bit about when he and Dave were doing some Everly Brothers - said they loved to do those harmonies.  But he was also a little sad talking about Dave, and what a recluse he is...he misses him.

Note the album that EC is holding here...

This picture was taken at the classic record store Village Music in Mill Valley - I want to say around 1985, when a friend and I were shopping at Village Music and they happened to pop in.

And Wilf...

Well done Billy.

Edmunds has always seemed uncomfortable with fame and touring, but I guess at 80 he's allowed to be retired. I last saw him at The Bottom Line (so that has to be more than 20 years ago). It was billed as a solo gig, and he played a set of instrumental guitar pieces. Right at the end he brought out just a brass section and ripped through a bunch of the big hits. "Crawling from the Wreckage" was amazing.

A great Graham Parker song!  When I got home last night I wanted to make sure my memory was working; indeed it was, as Nick had produced both GP's first and third albums, and a song or two on his second one.

And who can forget:

I like GP a lot, too. His Last Rock and Roll Show live album with the Figgs is a real favorite.
