Carole King

Yea, the guitarist, Peppy. You’re musical knowledge is scary. I met the drummer, a couple yrs ago at my sister’s 50th. (She went out with his brother for many years and is close to the family). You know they’re all from W.Hempstead?

I wonder have you ever heard of Mode IQ?

her kid's album (music to maurice sendak books) is terrific. i can't listen to anything else of hers as it was overplayed in my house growing up. saw her during the 1986 presidential campaign, talking about how much she liked john anderson (the politician, not the one from Yes) but was glad he wasn't running against Reagan 2.

Again, her performances aren't nearly the point.

sure - but I think you are missing our point - to a certain age group she is the definition of "mom music" - not that its bad, just that if I hear her voice, I don't think "hey what a great songwriter" I think "oh fuck when was the last time I called my mom"

Its purely a psychological thing.

Let me start with the three songs that inspired this thread (upon hearing them performed by their original proponents Saturday afternoon):

"Chains"

"Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby"

"Oh No Not My Baby"

How could you ever get sick of those great songs? (I'm sure your household wasn't overplaying the Cookies and Maxine Brown.)

But my point is, who even listens to her records now? That's not why she's great (or at least not mainly while she's great). It's her songwriting for others, years and years before she became a singer-songwriter. Songs she mainly never did herself.

Surely when you hear the Cookies or the Crystals or Maxine Brown or Little Eva you don't think of your mother.

At least I hope not.

A super-important NY DJ. To whom Wikipedia ascribes the theory that it was really Carole King singing on "The Locomotion."

No wai!

In all these years I have never heard nor seen it from a second source.

(Just read the Wiki entry for the song with the no-citation claim about this Ingram person, here.)

My informant was Harold Bronson of Rhino Records, which may have still been only a store at that point although the label must have been coming right along. At the Sunday midnight Columbia Records' parking lot record swap meet, while he was assessing my scores, one of which was a 45 of "The Loco-Motion."

Yeah, I would call Harold Bronson at least sort of credible.

Hee. I didn't know him or nothin', he was just a slightly older guy at the swap meet who dressed kind of bougie and knew a TON about EVERYTHING.

He went through this big stack of 45s and had something really interesting and smart and GREAT to say about every single one. Another one I had that particular night was "ABC" by the Jackson 5, and he goes, "What a great song. The Jackson 5! Now WHY don't I have their Greatest Hits?!" and I was like, Dude, you must be some kind of GENIUS!!!
