The Pete Wells Thread

I see him in the east village every day so I'm not sure how hard he's working on that.

wasn’t his original place somewhere on the jersey shore? somewhere a lot further south than that?

Yes, in Point Pleasant Beach. (It’s actually mentioned at the beginning of the APP article linked to by Tubbs.)

Nobody ever listens to me when I argue how stupid and in fact pernicious food photos are.  So let me try it this way.

Today Pete Wells issued a one-star review of Anton's, complaining that the food is inconsistent:  some dishes on the menu are good, many aren't.

The review is accompanied by the usual slideshow.  It features mainly heavily styled photos of dishes on the menu.  I want to emphasize that these photos are heavily styled.  This is not what the food looks like when you order it.  This is a glamour-shot version.

So while the review is warning you that much of the food isn't that good, the quasi-pornographic photos are doing everything they can to make it look enticing.  In other words, the photos don't support the text -- they actively subvert it.  (And, hey, what the fuck are styled photos doing accompanying a review anyway?????)

This isn't journalism.  This is anti-journalism.

(Makes me miss the Pink Pig.  At least Wilf's photos looked unappetizing.)

But I don’t take offense. I recall a mainstream media outlet asking to use my photos as examples of bad food photos. 😄

But the serious point was that I was taking photos of the food as it actually looked, under the lighting actually provided in the restaurant. All those photos where it was an indistinct brown blob, that’s what it looked like.

My evidence, under decent lighting with the same camera or phone, and absent human error, my photos were acceptable. (I am sure Sneak hasn’t seen my Instagram.)

But you have to keep in mind eyesight varies greatly, especially when it comes to low light situatiions, so what you might see as realistic might not be so for others.

I agree it's silly to give restaurant the opportunity to hire a food stylist for the reviews but then you're looking for newspaper ugly vs ugly ugly.

Sure, but nobody is seeing the magic pictures made with expensive cameras and professional lighting.

I remember many media dinners where bloggers would stand on chairs with massive cameras to look down on the food, and get someone else to hold a light for them. Fine if you are making food porn, but as Sneak said, it's not accurate reporting.

I thought the review made Anton's sound pretty good, especially as I can't see myself ordering lasagna or roast chicken.
