Jing Fong?

Recommended Posts

Anyone been recently? I'm looking for a fun place for dinner for about 35-40 people. I was at two events at JF back in the 90s, and I really liked the food. I thought the room was pleasantly tacky and kitschy. We will not be particularly adventurous eaters.

This is one of the only places left in NYC where you can get an appetizer, main and dessert.

Ha!

Do you like it more than say, Congee Village - which is good for a lot of people as well. And do they let you order ahead?

I don't think I've been to Congee Village. I went to Oriental Garden recently, and thought it wasn't very good and absurdly over-priced.

I've only had the dim sum there -- it's our Chinese New Year tradition

(Jing Fong or China Pearl in Boston depending on where we are) --

but we supplement the small bites with a big mess of greens and,

sometimes, a noodle dish. Everything has been decent on average

and on our last visit (this past New Year) the food was actively good.

The pork buns were superior to the ones we picked up later at two

local bakeries (one old school, one newfangled) and the durian pastry

pleasantly funky.

Congee Village is definitely not overpriced. They also have private rooms - you should check it out.

And karaoke!

I'm still hearing stories about that dinner.

I have ordered dinner for 15 or so people - they'll double/triple up portions and in general do a nice job. I mean, it's still a giant Chinese restaurant, but it's practically impossible to spend more than $25 a head, unless you drink a lot of weirdly tinted alcohol.

Congee Village is booked.

Whooda thunk.

Did you try their other place, Congee Bowery? I'm not sure either is a "fun" place, as they tend toward attitude, only moderate helpfulness and plopping the food down on the table, but they generally are above the average in quality and selection. Especially if you dont order wrong.

Jing Fong is now the best place for dim sum in Manhattan.. It's been the best for a little bit.. They have some good bbq duck and pork plates that are wheeled around.. You can go up to the side counters for good tripe, for good greens, when they are pan searing the chive dumplings they are pretty good, they have fried tofu in broth that is good, they have plates of clams which are decent.. Some things are better than others but, for selection, variety and well, my new no wait method, it's kind of great..  But, by no means is this like fantastic.. It gets the job done, I would say it's a 5.5 out of 10 in terms of being good.  So, when you first walk in, they give you a number right by the escalator.. You are supposed to wait for your number to be called but, don't.. Take that number and go directly up the escalator.. Then just walk up to someone and tell them how many you are and you are seated immediately.. This has worked for the last 6 times I have gone, with varying number of people.. So yeh, just take the number, go right upstairs and there is no wait..
