Behemoth
Spent another lovely long weekend hiking in Südtirol. Even the extra hour on the highway, because of the G7, didn't dampen our mood. You can get fresh buttermilk in many of the mountain cabins on the trails. And homemade speck and cheese. Beautiful wildflowers this time of year.
nuxvomica
if you ever decide to explore more to the west, say Piedmont , i highly recommend Stefano Bellotti's Cascina degli Ulivi - great wines, great food, biodynamic farm. Alessandria province; also, home to timorasso!
Behemoth
Thanks for the tip! We drove to Piedmont a while back, but before kids. I would only do it now if we have at least a week to recover from the drive. Beautiful region, great food.
Anthony Bonner
So is merano our best bet or is it really about the place you stay, not the town.
Sneakeater
Merano is a very nice town. But to me, everywhere is about the place you stay. Don't ignore the Dolomites.
Behemoth
Merano is nice but there are lots of other options. With kids, I would consider Parkhotel Holzner in Soprabolzano. View of the Dolomites (from the pool!), good restaurant, organized kids stuff including hikes, and you're right next to the lift to go down to Bolzano.
Tubbs
Thanks for popping this thread up. I think I just found our vacation for next summer. Easier drive from Munich or Milan to this area?
Behemoth
Munich is a bit closer, but traffic at the Brenner pass can be an additional factor.
Tubbs
Thanks. All these places look quite nice, certainly nicer than similar places in the us for much lower cost.
Daniel
I know Luca Roagna has one close to Barolo.
Anthony Bonner
Just back from a few days at Parkhotel Holzner in Soprabolzano. Great suggestion from Behemoth. Loved our time there. It was also fun to be the lone Americans. Probably even better for kids when school in Germany isn't in session, but they did a great job with ours, I completely understand what she means about the crowd in her original post tho. Plus I learned a lot about traditional Bavarian(I guess) casual tailoring from the other men there.
Behemoth
Oh how cool! And that view from the pool...
Anthony Bonner
The pool is amazing. The really do a nice job of blending the traditional style elements with the contemporary parts of the building. However Germans are fucking crazy. It was 60-65 degrees and sunny - and people were hanging out in the sun by the pool in bathing suits going in and out of the water!!.
Sneakeater
You're lucky it was a "family hotel" so they were wearing bathing suits.
Behemoth
We’re at the point now where the kids can do intermediate hikes and stay up past 9pm. This is the second time we’ve hiked around the Hirzer and it is utterly breathtaking. There are a lot of small huts that offer homemade strudel, buttermilk and schnapps. Gentian and alpine roses in full bloom...
