Stone
I thought there was a thread about this. If I drop my cable subscription, I can find almost everything I need through Netflix, Hulu, etc. But I can't get live news programs. Roku has some news channels, but they seem to be old clips of recent stories. (Maybe CNN streams?) Is there a way to stream broadcast tv/news straight from the net?
Suzanne F
I was going to suggest Al Jazeera America but I see in their two-page (!) ad in The New Yorker that they're only pushing their cable channels.
Abbylovi
Can you get recent AMC shows without cable? I'm seriously thinking about it and that would be my sticking point. I assume you're keeping Time Warner for Internet?
splinky
recently, time warner cable is charging me $250 a month and not providing showtime or cbs. it has just occurred to me that now might be a good time to not watch dexter, letterman and elementary for free. most of what i've missed will be on youtube, hulu or online at the network website for free at some point. i seldom watch live tv anymore, often waiting until the end of a season and throwing my own marathon. now, i'm not sure why i was paying so much for stuff i'm not worried about watching, right away, anyhow. Abbylovi
$250 a month?? I hope a human remote control comes with that level. Ala carte channel watching is coming for ya Time Warner, hope you are terrified.
Stone
I have RCN, but it's not much cheaper than Time Warner anymore. When I was without cable, I didn't really miss any shows. And once Breaking Bad and Mad Men end, is there a need for AMC? Hate-watching the zombies? Is Low Winter Sun any good?

The brilliant AMC executives tried to trick Breaking Bad watchers into watching Low Winter Sun. The night of the BB premiere they promised a peek at the next week of BB in LWS's first commercial break. Thinking ok I can watch fifteen minutes of this, I stuck around. 30+ minutes later the commercial break rolled around and I was pissed and resolved to not watch LWS. Lauren
$250 for cable? Wow. I just checked my bill, I pay $93 for "Digital Starter". With that I get most channels, excluding HBO, etc. What I don't get but would really like is the Sundance channel and IFC. What keeps me from dumping cable is that I record everything and watch it whenever I want. I don't like feeling beholden to the whims of the network on when they will let me stream something. Oh, and I've watched the first two eps of Low Winter Sun. It's an okay story but I'm not feeling invested in the characters. I'm giving it one more ep before I decide to keep or dump it. mitchells
$250 a month?? The porno stuff adds up quickly, especailly since they stopped providing free previews.

The no free previews thing is totally f'd up. I have the twc super premium package with high speed Internet and telephone. The media piece is the most expensive part of the package. The bundle explains the cost. The question is do you need the phone except for the net? If you don't then can you get the net elsewhere for a low enough price and TV from some other place for less or the same? Of course, you get to deal with more customer service people that way and they always blame your equipment for the problems.
Daisy
I have RCN combined internet and cable service with HBO and SHO and HD on demand. I also use the on demand movies fairly often, my bill averages about $165--$175 per month. The internet service really really sucks though..
Nathan
CNN streams and you can buy a cheap HD antenna from Amazon for $20 that will pick up broadcast TV. of course....I just switched from RCN to FIOS and added HBO for $10 a month.....HBO Go is awesome.
