I'm planning a weekend trip to Austin in February. I'd love some advice on restaurants for dinner. I'm hoping to find 3 tasty and newish venues. I'm thinking of Barley Swine and Uchi for two nights. Thanks in advance. (Any other drinking and activity advice would also be great.)

there are 150 opinions for every 100 Austinites....but I definitely think a lunch at Trudy's would not go amiss.

La Condesa may be best but a lot of the menu isn't Tex-Mex...

Thanks for this. I've reserved at Uchi and La Condesa so far. (Barely Swine is closed today, but I plan to telephone tomorrow.)

Also, I'm looking for a place to stay. The super modern small places that I've found via "boutique hotel" searches are all complete. Since I'm a fan of kitsch, I'm considering the Austin Motel. It's crazy cheap--perhaps a "you get what you pay for" prospect? Any advice?

Thanks, Daisy.

I've had friends stay at Austin Motel... it's cheap, good location. But, yeah, it's an old motel. You might want to check out The Heywood. The location might not be as convenient, but it's nice and new. Steve R and Ginny stayed there a year or so ago and, I believe, liked it.

I've had good meals at Qui and Uchi recently. Haven't been to Barley Swine in awhile, though I've had good meals there. Great BBQ at the moment, but if you're not a big meat eater, it probably doesn't matter. I'd skip Trudy's, but everything else mentioned looks good.

Bufalina is my place, and Daisy was kind enough to mention it. I'm there most nights cooking. It's fun, and there's good wine to drink, but you need to be in the mood for pizza. If you're looking for new, the Statesman ran their 'best new restaurants' feature a couple days ago. (And I'm not just mentioning this because we received a nice mention :P )

Some exciting new stuff slated to open early next year, but I'm not sure what places will have their doors open by Feb.

Re: Bar Congress: when I was there a couple of years ago, the apps were HUGE. Are they still? I think I had some sort of hot (in temperature) guacamole thing; very good, but that and one other app were almost more than I could finish as a whole meal.

That sounds like you were in 2nd Bar & Kitchen, which is a different menu than Bar Congress.

Ah, could be. It's been a while. And as of today I am officially an Old Lady so I can forget things and get things mixed up without penalty.

Ha! Well me too. Let me know if you want company for happy hour :->
