The show has, improbably, never stopped being popular. Even with all the bitching about its persistent whiteness and occasional transphobia and unrealistic portrayal of life in Manhattan. (Did you know that it is incumbent upon sitcoms to display a relentless gritty naturalism? Well, now you do.)

It's about a group of friends, as the title implies. It's also a very elegantly-structured sitcom, an ideal example of the genre. And as noted, it holds up, despite its shortcomings, and despite the fact that many of the issues it addressed were very much of their time. It also bears repeated watching because the acting is unusually strong for an "unserious" television show.

That confirms my vague knowledge of what it was about.
