San Francisco in 2014 and Beyond

Considering going to Gary Danko next month. I like their concept of being able to order how every many courses from all areas of their menu. Has anyone been recently?

Also, whats business casual in the Bay Area now?

Can't comment on Danko.

 

Business casual appears to be flip flops and a skateboard, segway, or electric scooter. Perhaps with an ironic fedora.

It's a place to go celebrate your annibirthdary, probably with seared scallops, some sort of loin (a tender one, whoever it's from) in an overly salty reduction sauce, and a flourless thing with a candle or personalized greeting such as "Congratulations, human, on a generic event!"

 

It doesn't do a bad job at that and in today's terms, food prices are gentle, but I think if you're looking for great food there are better options.

To parallel Orik's comments, I haven't heard GD mentioned in years. And even then, not by people really interested in food.

Our best meals on this very short trip were, in no particular order: Plow, The Progress, La Ciccia, Bar Crenn. Each had some wonderful food, as well as some just good food. Bar Crenn had some not so good food, in the mains. And both The Progress and Bar Crenn had their service issues.

 

I've discussed Bar Crenn.

 

At The Progress, I literally had to send the waitress away, to get our first drinks and wine, before she could rush through telling us how the menu "works." Because I could tell they were trying to pull a rush job on a busy Friday night. But the duck "platter" we had was super:

 

 

With duck fried rice, confit leg and wing. The breast was steamed first.

Thanks. I think we will pass on Gary Danko. Our hotel is super close to Kin Khao which is appealing. I just cant handle spicy foods so Im a bit hesitant. My meat and potatoes loving husband who grew up in Los Altos is pushing for House of Prime Rib. Which is fine with me but they only have 10pm reservations the entire week we are there. I have zero issues with eating at the bar though.

 

We also want to go to a couple Giants games. Im really torn as to where the best seats are they all seem to be awesome.

 

Any other recommendations are welcome. I dont eat offal and am not a fan of wild game and askew caviar, uni and any type of roe. My husband is allergic to eggplant. Id love to find a place that does roasted oysters well. And any place that offers west coast oysters is one I can make a meal out of.

The Marshall Store? (if you're gonna have a car, which we always do when in San Francisco).

 

Hog Island Oyster Co. at the Ferry Plaza building...be prepared to wait a bit, but the view is pretty great, so not a prob.

Big YES for The Marshall Store! A beautiful ride, too. And Hog Island is hard to beat.

 

If you're in the Castro, Anchor Oyster Bar is pretty good, and neighborhood more "atmospheric" than Swan's Oyster Depot on Polk.

There's also a branch of Anchor in SOMA, on Minna Street (a little alleyway) off 2nd between Mission and Howard. It's loud, but the seafood is really good.

Thanks! We wont have a car until we leave Saturday to go to Tahoe. The parking at hotels is outrageous and we wouldnt be able to expense it since the office he will be working from is close to the hotel. But Im sure we could take an Uber.

Oysters in any form are fine with me! Ill check out the places you all recommended.

 

Being from the Northeast, is there anything I should seek out in SF that isnt common in NYC?

Yes - legal weed.

 

I particularly enjoyed the dispensary called Harvest on Geary. But there's one in the Mission also.
