Wilfrid
You would love it. I went into E&O Kitchen in a state of emergency having neglected to eat for a long time and just needing anything. But I still didn’t much enjoy the ridiculously sweet and sticky ribs or very ordinary heap of fried calamari. There was no sense of anyone caring, service wise. There are many cheap places in the area that would have done a better job, unless it was late enough that not much else was open.
voyager
I went into E&O Kitchen in a state of emergency having neglected to eat for a long time and just needing anything. So sorry. Most of SF is within 10 to 15 minutes of Union Square. This must have been some major blood sugar crisis.
Wilfrid
I hear both of you. Ironically, it wasn’t blood sugar as being in ketosis I don’t have that any more, it was just negligence about not eating all day and having no plans. Long day, late night, my fault. Wilfrid
Next night, for various reasons I ended up at Brenda’s French Soul Food, an unexpected Creole-ish casual place at the Civic Center end of the Tenderloin. The broiled oysters were kind of garish, all kinds of different heavy toppings, the fried chicken was okay. Please know I am buffeted by non-gastronomic considerations in some of these choices. A pleasant hour spent at Oddjob on Mission, a reinvented Edward Hopper scene. Also took a deep dive into Smuggler’s Cove, which could exhaust the fascination of anyone interested in rum. Anyway, Monsieur Benjamin and Benjamin Cooper both highly recommended. Not related.
StephanieL
Brenda's has been around for ages, and I think it's pretty good (though the salting is a bit heavy at time). The lines for weekend breakfast/brunch are huge, even when they open at 8 AM They just opened a counter service location in Oakland, a block from where I have chorus rehearsals every week, and have a "Hot Beignets" sign a la Krispy Kreme's "Hot Donuts Now" signs. If you haven't been, your next tiki bar fix should be at Pagan Idol on Bush Street. On weekdays, it gets nice and quiet after 7 PM or so.
Wilfrid
Yes, they were heavily promoting clam beignets. I just needed casual in that neighborhood and it was fine (not a destination). Pagan Idol noted. Oddjob was very laid back and friendly. I ended up there after trying Whitechapel (gin specialists) and it was closed for a private Dreamforce party. Dreamforce has overflowed the business district. I even found attendees at Li Po in Chinatown, which used to be a sanctuary.
StephanieL
Yeah, when Dreamforce is in town all bets are off.
Wilfrid
I was on my way to dinner when I stopped at Oddjob, but I thought some Marcona almonds wouldn’t hurt. I think I paid maybe $6. I got a huge pot, at least half a pound, and they were really good. Fortunately the pot had a lid, so I took them to dinner, took them back to the hotel, transferred them to a ziploc, ate some more on the plane, and was still eating them in New York. This is laudatory value for money.
Meredith380
Wish o knew how to post pictures.
Wilfrid
You have to host the pictures on an image hosting site. There are lots of them, free: here's an example https://imgbb.com/ Once you've uploaded the pictures to the third party site, you should get a URL which you can insert in the field which opens if you click the icon which looks like a frame picture above, just to the right of the link/break link icons. voyager
Is Mouthfuls going to move beyond this (archaic) method? Other similar sites now offer "click and drag" photo uploads. Do these cost all that much more? And/or do we eed to pass the hat? I think it has been raised before.

StephanieL
I didn't realize how many crab fisherman stored literally all of their crab pots there. Jeez, how bad do things need to get?
joethefoodie
Well, it might be good for the crabs.
