small h
I went there often after a movie at the Kip's Bay, and I will miss it very much.
Wilfrid
Yes, that’s typically when I went there too.
Orik
We used to live nearby and would stop there often, but it hasn't been doing well for a while and didn't really recover from covid. A shame.
Steve R.
Actually, Sam just decided to retire. We missed the closing down party a couple of weeks ago. Many long time friends, including a bunch from the original closed Atlantic Ave location. The "Black Coffee Blues Band" was always great to hear, especially when Poppa Chubby was in town. Wilfrid
The Dublin House on West 79th turned 100 before the holidays. ”Perhaps a celebratory libation is indicated.” Nah, let’s just go drink some Guinness. (Apologies to Nik Cohn.)
small h
I lived on that block for two years. Late at night it was a pretty rough place. I saw a guy get karate kicked in the head there, once. Also, the taps were filthy.
Wilfrid
Tonight it is empty so unless i assault myself I should be fine. Wasn’t looking for a crowd anyway.
small h
Oh, that's good. I did enjoy sitting there on a Sunday afternoon. And it was better than the fratty junk on Amsterdam. I'm trying to remember where I liked to drink up there and coming up empty.
Wilfrid
Yeah, I don’t have favorites on the UWS. I pass here all the time on the crosstown M79, so I felt nostalgic.
small h
I'm almost never up there, but when the Lucerne was in the news last year I did get nostalgic for my old room. And then I got mad at the NIMBYs.
Wilfrid
I just read that El Quijote has reopened. I wonder if the interior has been messed around. Will reconnoiter next week.
Wilfrid
That led me to check Sardi's and it has indeed re-opened, although for some reason without personally notifying me.
Sneakeater
El Quixote’s new Brooklyn management has reduced seating capacity from something like 200 to something like 50. So it’s got to be a LITTLE different.
Lippy
From the article -- higher prices, smaller portions. somehow I doubt that the broiled, stuffed lobster will be on the new menu. I strongly suspect that this re-vamp will be another typical decision by new owners that takes a popular and viable business, "upgrades" it by altering its particular character or over-expanding, runs it into the ground, and wonders why it failed.
