splinky
Koda Farms growers of Kokuho Rose Rice is shutting down and will license their trademarks to other growers/manufacturers. Heartbreaking due to their legacy but also because I rely on their Blue Star Mochiko rice flour for gluten free baking. MitchW
I just had to run down the block... Recently packaged, at the end of May, so probably the last of their production. Edited August 13, 2024 by MitchW
Orik
An excellent local option (although I don't think they sell mochiko) https://www.greatjoyfamilyfarm.com/product/akitakomachi-white-rice
MitchW
Interesting as I didn't realize that rice could be grown in the climate of "upstate" NY. As mentioned before, I usually buy rice from The Rice Factory, which offers an amazing selection and ability to specify degree of milling for the rice. But now I gotta try this place - might even be worth a drive up to the farm store! The Rice Factory does sell this: SYOKUSAN】Rice flour Special "For Sweets" -きぬふわやか 米粉 スイーツ用- But I have no idea if it's a sub for mochiko, and it looks pretty expensive compared to the Koda stuff. @Orik - what other products have you gotten from Great Joy farm? They have a lot! Went down a tiny rabbit hole... https://cals.cornell.edu/news/2019/10/can-rice-be-grown-new-yorks-climate
Orik
We get produce from them sometimes, very good quality overall, but the rice and other grains are especially good. No reason why rice wouldn't grow here - after all some of the best rice in Japan is from Hokkaido...
