Apple Watch

Appearance is crucial. First adopters won't wear ugly, intrusive stuff: see Google Glass. Hence the initial price. I think it's smart to start at the high end with this product.

The challenge for wearables generally, outside an industrial setting, is that they mustn't make wearers look stupid.

eta: responding to sneak

All of their products function that way.

But more seriously, speaking of SF/NYC differences, everyone there already seems to be sporting one of those barely-functioning health tracking bracelets and will gladly drop $500 or so on an apple version (although maybe not on the only-for-Nathans, pre-alpha version), so there's no incentive to suddenly drop the long standing allergy for swapping stuff out.

eta2: also, all of south east asia is waiting breathlessly for the Hermes/LV/Prada/whoever skinned apple watch. It doesn't even have to do anything.

If they are smart - and they are. They'll figure out a form factor that allows one to swap internals in a very nice professional looking case.

That's never been the apple game, though.

that is true

Forgetting about apps, price, etc. the biggest issue remains battery life. For both apple and android fugly-wear, straight out of the box they barely last the day if you use them at all, which probably means in a year you need to recharge them every 6 hours.

Battery life is an enormous challenge.

The issue of co-branding an Apple watch with Hermes, Prada etc is going to be extremely tricky. It's way outside Apple's traditional comfort zone

Right. But with the Apple Watch, we're back at version one.

(It's recently gotten better with laptops, right?)

will someone come around soon and note that analog hand wound pocket watches made in the 1890's work much better than apple watches?

Nope. If you buy a laptop that's as powerful compared to two years ago as it should be, you're still at 3 hour battery life. They've just been getting (relatively) less powerful.

Fortunately, I have an Apple laptop, so I have no idea how powerful it is.

Exactly, and you don't care. Lawyer stuff hasn't become more cpu intensive (I'm guessing)
