Being driven home from LIC a couple of days ago, I was pleasantly shocked to find us driving on the Southbound (hmmm, I guess that's really Westbound) (see??????) Kosciusko Bridge, which apparently has been completed.

I remember being at a cabaret show and the post-Miles audience seemed surprised that “Autumn Leaves” had lyrics in any language.

Tried to impress on my daughter that “My Way” is a French song, but not sure it registered. Watching Elvis, she told me that Frank Sinatra had also recorded it. She then informed me that Elvis had had a twin brother who died at birth.

Being a good father means, I think, not throwing the two volume Guralnick biography at her head. I am a good father.

Over the past 40 years I'd guess that I've learned more from my child than he from me.    We just know different things.

I expect and hope to learn many things from my daughter.

Details of Elvis bio not among them.

Although the good thing about being the father is giving myself credit for having steeped her in Elvis and Johnny Cash at an impressionable age. I have taken and accepted criticism that she didn’t get an equal dose of James Brown, but there was never a chance she’d miss great black music in her diverse NYC high schools; and she had better mentors than me for that.

On Monday, I took the first class on the road to a new coffee career--the Specialty Coffee Association's daylong Introduction to Coffee class.  Not only did I get a 100% score on the exam at the end, but the instructor pulled me aside, out of earshot of the 2 other students, to give me props for my palate and the nuances I was picking out during the cupping portion of the day.  Yeah, I think the sensory/tasting pathway is the way to go.
