Nathan
Will you have a car? Driving 35 minutes to Taylor or Lockhart will get you better bbq than anywhere besides Franklin.
prasantrin
I'll definitely have a car. We're probably going to drive from the great white north (final destination is actually santa fe nm).
Steven Dilley
While you should definitely check out Lockhart and/or Taylor, both La BBQ and Valentina's in Austin are top notch, minus the Franklin line. (Though there can still be lines at those places... just not four-plus-hour lines.)
Wilfrid
Hoping to be back in the summer, when Micklethwaites and Bufalina will be top of list. ETA: Oh more BBQ recs from Dilley. Thanks!
prasantrin
OH, no!! https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/food/wp/2017/08/26/another-tragedy-in-texas-franklin-barbecue-is-closed-after-early-morning-fire As if Texans weren’t dealing with enough already, with Hurricane Harvey dumping profane amounts of rain on their heads, residents woke up Saturday to learn that one of the Lone Star State’s iconic smokehouses had closed indefinitely after an early morning fire. Franklin Barbecue, famous for its long lines and succulent wood-smoked brisket, went up in flames early Saturday morning in an accidental fire. Aaron Franklin, the co-founder and James Beard Award-winning chef behind the restaurant, blamed the blaze on heavy winds generated by Harvey.
prasantrin
But The lone bit of good news: No one was injured in the blaze, even though a late-night cook was smoking ribs when the fire broke out. The cook is a “little shaken up, but he’s good,” Franklin said And “If there was a part to the building that’s easiest to rebuilt, that was the one,” Franklin said of the smokehouse. “It’s not the end of the world.” “It doesn’t do us any good to be bummed out about it,” he added, laughing at his own bad fortune. “We got to keep working on it.” Sounds like a really good guy to know. They're hoping to rebuild within a month, depending on what happens with Harvey.
joiei
All that rain and now no Franklin's. Life in Texas is getting tough.
Suzanne F
So people will have to buy his cookbook and do it for themselves.
Rail Paul
It will be interesting to see what improvements are added in the rebuild.
Wilfrid
The poster formerly known as OTB is instagramming nice pictures from Terry Black's BBQ. Anyone seconding that?
Wilfrid
I actually could get to Franklin with my schedule next week. Annoying. I don't see how I'm not getting to Bufalina this time. Micklethwait and La on the BBQ list; possibly Terry Black's.
memesuze
No need to bother with any of the Black's bbq restaurants --whether Terry's or the original down in Lockhart--pedestrian, all of them
Wilfrid
Noted, thanks.
Abbylovi
I went in January and my favorite was Snow's in Lexington. I think only open on Saturday and you definitely need a car.
Abbylovi
Midnight Cowboy in Austin proper was also a fun speakeasy cocktail bar.
