Russ & Daughters explicitly says it's not a deli on the website.  I just like having the same discussion every few years.

i think Ben's Best in Rego Park is better than Ben's Kosher. Ben's Best also serves nice portions

I don't think Eisenberg's is a deli. To me, it's a coffee shop.   Harry & Ida's, perhaps? Though there is no seating.

Updated list:

Katz's

Carnegie

Ben Ash

2nd Avenue

Sarge's

Ben's (various locations)

Golden's

Mill Basin

Liebman's

Dave's

Mile End

Jay & Lloyd's

Mendy's

Ben's Best

Essen

Fine & Schapiro

Berger's

Pastrami Queen

Artie's

Frankel's

Loeser's

(Barney Greengrass)

We're keeping Mile End, yes? Barney Greengrass? Anyway, the main achievement is that we've identified more than twenty Jewish delis still in existence: I didn't count the number of branches of Ben's.

I forgot this list, though it may need some major updating (like no more Carnegie, Loeser's, Artie's et al.)

A trip out to Mill Basin Kosher Deli yesterday was disappointing.

Not because there is only counter-service currently. Not because this IS NOT placed on your table immediately:

But because the food was kind of...uninspiring?

The potato latke chips appetizer was possibly the best of what we ordered.  The corned beef sandwich, the pastrami sandwich, the "plate" all needed a little, I dunno, jewish love?

I'm thinking perhaps Sarge's deserves a visit?

And I had a sandwich at Pastrami Queen (upper east) last week that just was so much better than the one yesterday.

This has no relation, but the "reuben" at Cafe Katja just kind of makes every other reuben in the city seem like it needs help. Maybe because it's pork belly? Maybe because they use great rye bread?

Time for some more research, I guess.

Haven’t been to Mill Basin in ages. Whenever we occasionally ate there, I always ordered the knoblewurst sandwich which was excellent.

When we’re in the city, Sarge’s is a regular for us because it’s close to our apartment. We always get pastrami, always emphasize that it must be “very fatty,” and have never been disappointed, even when we order delivery. (They have their own delivery guys.) It’s a different style from Katz’s but, in our opinion, just as delicious.

Yesterday, when we were having this discussion (pre-meal? post-meal? during-meal?) about Jewish delis, we were almost trying to differentiate between places which are good for their sandwiches  vs. places where one might still get a worthy dinner platter of, for example, tongue.

Said platter would be expected to come with a side of something (kishke, kasha, etc.) along with cole slaw and pickles, bread, etc.
