Suzanne F
Several commenters on the article in the NY Times have mentioned Harvey House, as well as Horn and Hardart Automats. And also groused that the list is too New York-centric. Probably correct on two of the three--much as I loved it, I'm not sure the Automat changed America all that much, but the list does cling to the coasts, mostly East. Well, that's a whole different set of research.
Lex
Has anyone ever stayed in a Howard Johnson motel? Back in the 1950s, when my family took vacation road trips, we usually stayed at inexpensive mom & pop motels. However, every once in a while, we would stay at a Howard Johnson Motor Lodge (as they were called). A real treat because they were so much more expensive and "posh." And, of course, we ate at the adjoining restaurant. My exposure to HoJo's was the same as yours - occasional stays on vacation trips. My food memories are hazy - safe plain 1960s food. The hot dogs, OTOH, were a revelation. Served on split top New England style rolls that seemed wrong to my 10 year old sensibility. After all, everyone knew buns were meant to be split horizontally. But they were made with butter (either grilled in butter or the rolls were brushed with butter and toasted) and they were outstanding. My brothers and I regularly pestered our parents to pull into Hojo's for lunch.
Rich
Of the nine I visited, the most influential IMO was The Mandarin.
Rich
In fact, the owner's new cooking show is the best new cooking program I've seen in a long time - and she's 95 years old. But has a few years to go to catch up with me.

Orik
I started to read it and it seems promising (and of course touches on many points we've been discussing on eGOAMFF for a while) but the editing is pretty crappy.
Wilfrid
Are there any real clangers I can throw at the author when I meet him?
Orik
Ask him if he really think terrapin and canvasback duck merit 40+ mentions in about as many pages I got tired of the repetitiveness after Delmonico, maybe I'll go back to it at some point.
