Another way of looking at it is to ask yourself if this kind of writing would appeal or be of value if you were a novice diner or cook. What is of value or interest changes with time and experience, as does patience with writing styles.

Weird. I thought it was pretty good. Certainly better than the other mass titles out there.

Yup. Ran out of steam at some point, but not bad.

http://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/17/dining/lucky-peach-closing.html

"Dave and I have had a difficult but successful partnership for years, like two objects that both have intense gravitational pull, said Mr. Meehan, who wrote the Momofuku cookbook with Mr. Chang in 2009. It made interesting friction for a while, but I think we just kind of collided in the last six months."

Is "was" operative there? Is Lucky Peach better than, like, Fool?

Not better than fool, but also trying to be a real business that kept to a publishing schedule. Last I heard fool was on hiatus because the editorial folks had other projects.

I definitely enjoyed the early issues. I think I ran out of steam.

This post should be deleted.  But until it is:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/dining/peter-meehan-resigns-la-times.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage&section=Food

The problem isn't Peter Meehan.  The problem is Capitalism.

People seem to be looking now for some form of "Nice Capitalism".  There's already a word for "Nice Capitalism".  It's Socialism.

I honestly feel badly for people like Peter who are now publicly vilified for functioning exactly as they were supposed to under a disgusting, sickening, reprehensible system.  Cancelling him won't change anything.

How come Chang hasn't gotten cancelled? In the early, pre-success days, that guy screamed at everyone.

I'm uncomfortable with all of this.  I have more sympathy for people trying to move John T Edge.

I saw the Twitter thread when it came out and her complaints appeared to be

1 he made a lot of money

2 he commuted to LA

3 he could be an asshole to work for (although the magnitude of that claim is kind of unexamined or place in context of the role he was in)

1&2 are just not reasons to object to his continued employment. In the Twitter thread she also made notice of how much he paid himself at lucky peach as well.

I haven't followed the Meehan story very closely, but it is actually possible to be a good, thoughtful, considerate manager, and have your staff like you, even under the crushing heel of capitalism.

he's not resigned his cushy job because people were mad he yelled at them. there's a lot of other bad behaviour that's been alleged.
