wow--thanks for all the tips people. bolderite, are you one of the h's? if not, i'd like to know what's keeping mrs. h from mouthfuls.

it isn't about saving money per se, as much as it is about investing money in the places where we will derive the most pleasure. and so:

splitting apps etc. sounds good. i'm actually tempted now to get the salumi platter to start and then split the gnocchi (if they have it) as a second course before getting to the entrees.

re wine, we'll probably end up with a glass for mrs. jones and maybe 2 for me. mrs. jones isn't much of a wine drinker and i'd have to kill most of the bottle myself if we got one (and i'm not allowed more than 2 drinks a night--complicated story that we don't need to go into).

3 glasses of wine will probably still cost more than their cheapest bottle.

They have only one $7 red by the glass. All the rest will cost more than $22 for 3 glasses, and $22 seems to be the cheapest bottle of red wine they have.

Yep, plus by the glass selections are notoriously limited in most places. A bottle hold four glasses. Pour one for the Mrs., two for you, and make your server's night by giving him/her the rest.

what i am intrigued by is their half-pours. we could try to do some matching half-pours with every course--it might come to a little bit more than a full bottle but we'd get better variety out of it. after all how many times do you turn 18?

On the wines, just be honest with Bobby (the sommelier and the guy in the suit wandering around tirelessly talking to everyone) about your likes and desires -- we are not big wine drinkers, we like bold/dry/sweet/ etc and moderately priced and he will turn you on to something good and reasonable. He does not oversell but wants people to be turned on to the wine experience.

Take bolderite's advice and consult with Bobby, even on the half pours. He's terrific and helpful.

I was just using the name that bolderite used in the quotation I cited. I don't even know the guy's last name by heart - I just looked it up on the website just now to remind myself. He was indeed terrific and helpful. I even bought one of the wines he recommended that night after I got home from Boulder.

i was kidding. i am usually wary of sommeliers, but since this gent comes so highly recommended i will indeed trust to his selections and integrity.

but this is all very premature: my birthday isn't till the end of feb.

Mongo-

C'est moi, AmyH. I was told by the entire H family that my moniker on the other board was sooooo boring, so I decided to spice things up . . pun intended.

Go for the bottle and offer Bobby (Stuckey) a taste. If Bobby looks busy ask you waiter to send Nate over. Nate looks about 12 yrs old but he also has a great knowledge of the wine list. You can tell either of them that we said to take care of you.

The culinary gods have responded, Mongo.

Frasca posted the January 25th menu on their website today.

Edited to add: Bobby rocks. Bartender Steve rocks. Server Joni rocks. Nice people, great food. If I lived in Boulder proper I would definitely be there on a weekly basis.

that's just the monday night prix fixe menus right? my birthday inconveniently falls on a thursday. but i am open to being pleasantly surprised--it doesn't seem like they do total menu makeovers anyway.

since you don't live in boulder i will gladly take on the role of your liaison with frasca (cabrales, if you're reading this applies to you as well). the only caveat is that i will have to send the checks to you for reimbursement. but on the other hand i will eat and drink with great gusto and report my findings in detail. it'll be almost as good as eating there yourself--i promise.

Nopers, it's the menu from the 25th of January (which happened to be a Tuesday). I have a copy of tonight's (which is different from the 25th) if you want me to scan it and PM it to you.

Yes, dammit, all this talk of Frasca reminded me I need to go more often so we ate at the bar tonight. Somebody owes me $175.

More later...

 Man, this grad student is in the wrong forum (and wants rlm as a friend). Where's the one for people like me who cut out Quizno's coupons? Or who eat at the bar 'cause the food is half off there?

i'm not seeing it on their site. can you post the url you're looking at? clicking on the dinner menu thing still downloads the dec 11 menu. but it isn't a big deal. i don't need to know in advance of when we get there. are you back from kansas?
