Spring 2017

Recommended Posts

Living in NoCal, unfortunately I can't report on ramps or fiddleheads. But this weekend we stopped at several orchard stands en route to and from the country. We gorged on some of the first sweet cherries of the Lodi (Central Valley) season. Brooks variety: large, black-red, crunchy, bursting with juice and flavor. Bings will be along in about a week.

And apricots. Not sure of the variety but they had a good balance of sugar to acid/flavor. Usually I hold out for Blenheim variety, but husband guessed correctly that these would be good. Glad he cancelled my vote.

At the peak of the season, when prices are lower, I'll can a few apricots and freeze some black cherry compote to serve with cheese throughout the year.

Here in south Florida, the growing season is largely done. The farm markets are shutting down until October.
