Superiority Burger

We came here last night for dinner.. Just a quick 3.5 mille walk from our house over in Broolyn.. We walked down Bedford, across Broadway dodging the beautiful smells of Peter Luger's Steaks and Diner's Burger, over the Williamsburg Bridge, moving swiftly through a steamy mist of Katz.s Pastrami on Houston and eventually on to East 9th Street.

 

I had not been aware of how small the place is.. Just a tiny little postage stamp.. Maybe 750 square feet, maybe 600 square feet.. There are 4 or five seats on one wall and a two seater in the corner window.. The place is very sparse.. there is a cooler of free water and a few people behind the person waiting at the register.

 

With no one in front of us, we ordered a classic burger without cheese, a sloppydave "joe", a tahini romaine salad and a burnt broccoli salad..

 

My overall impression was, everything was enjoyable.. We all felt things were incredibly salty.. But, the food was priced well and interesting..

 

I have some issue with veggie burgers and a lot of these vegan sandwiches.. I feel so many of them remind me of poorly made falafel sandwiches. In most cases, i would just rather be eating a falafel sandwich. These mixture are often grilled and loose and mushy.. Or half cooked have textural and heat inconsistencies. It just makes me wish I was eating a falafel. For me, the superiority burger was my least favorite sandwich we ate out of the three we ordered.. While A loved the flavor, it was just ok for me..

 

The other two sandwiches, the wrap and the sloppy dave were significantly more enjoyable to me.. I really enjoyed the Wrap, it had me longing for a moo shu. I loved the idea of the wrap, the flavor was delicious, if I lived in the area, I would add this to my Vegan life rotation.. Dare I say, i would even order this if I wasn't vegan..

 

The sloppy Dave was also fun for me. Miss A did not like it, she felt it was too ketchupy, while I enjoy the stewed flavor.. It also had a familiar meat like consistency and I really enjoyed the crunchy onions.. She also does not like when bread gets soggy.. But, Miss K and I crushed this.. We were happy with this item..

 

Where we felt things got very salty were with the burnt broccoli and the tahini salad.. I believe there were sugary cashews that were just fantastic.. I still ate the salads but, yeah, it was as salty as a dish I have ever been served.

 

I think this place is a beautiful addition to the Vegan and Vegetarian landscape.. I was just surprised, the burger was not as exciting as I expected.

I actually prefer their big mac version - I think the proportions work better with the overly umami'd veggie burger patty. That said I agree the non-burgers are the reason to go there.

 

that said, massively over rated by wells. Probably not worth a trip IMO.

It's worth a trip if you are Vegetarian but, not worth a trip otherwise.

Worth a trip is a high hurdle for a tiny (yes, uncomfortable) veggie burger place.

 

I stopped by to eat one today, as you'd reminded me. It's a very enjoyable bite for $6 plus tax. I carried it the few steps to Tompkins Sq Park.

I stopped by to eat one today, as you'd reminded me. It's a very enjoyable bite for $6 plus tax. I carried it the few steps to Tompkins Sq Park.

 

And you're safe from the hawk.

P.s. Speaking of vegan stuff, dizengoff must be laughing all the way back to philly with the $15+tip tourist platters but their pita bread is top notch and $6 for half a dozen. Decent hummus is $7/pint but you can do much better yourself.

This place has the same problem that a lot of vegetarian places have: they ladle on the savory flavors (particularly umami, as Bonner noted) in order to counteract the fact that the food is, like, vegetarian.

 

Not just the burger but, disappointingly, the non-burger dish I was fairly excited about: the burnt broccoli with eggplant and peppers and cashews and stuff. My first bite had me actively excited: the flavor screamed out. But by the time I was halfway through, it was just too much.

I still stop by this place fairly often for a burger, so it must be doing something right. Since the first curious visit I've never even looked at sides etc, I don't want to sit down (ha) and eat a meal here.

I think the gelato, the New Creation and Sloppy Dave sandwiches, and the daily special sides (the burnt brocc is fine but they really do have fun with the specials) are what make the place interesting and worth returning to. I like the burger well enough. Have never tried the tofu wrap or the faux-fried chicken sandwich made with tofu.

I'm going to vent about something.

 

I understand a no samples policy but when a guy who just spent 50 bucks on fake healthy fast food for his kids asks if they can sample the non-traditional gelato flavors maybe just maybe step back for a second and realize the dude wants to spend money with you but isn't interested in spending money on things their kid doesn't like.

 

Like assume I'm acting in good faith.
