Cloudy Outlook for Olive Oil Harvests in Italy

(I decided to open a new thread rather than divert Voyager's excellent discussion of the olive curing process)


NYTimes has an article about the second poor olive harvest in Italy. Hot, dry growing seasons have caused a significant drop in output. The need to purchase water has eroded profits. Some biodynamic farmers, who won't use pesticides or irrigation, saw trees wither.


Some varieties have done OK, others are gone. Experts see the warming and reduced rain as a consequence of climate change, while others see a cycle which goes back to Biblical times.The prevalence of hotter than normal summers has increased in the past 120 years. Either way, some observers believe that California, New Zealand, Australia, etc may become more significant in the world markets.


Either way, prices are going up for Italian oils.
