The Exterminating Angel

Recommended Posts

Thomas Adès's opera, at the Met, based on the Buñuel movie. We went last night. Had already heard a broadcast from Salzburg and wanted to see it live. So we actually sprang for seats from which we could see!

I can't quite say "enjoyable," given the content. But we were very glad to be there, and might go to the HD performance. Good production, excellent singing. It was neat to see Alice Coote as a woman for a change (and she has a very touching aria). Extensive use of the ondes martenot.

Someone once wrote about the "snob hit of the year" play on Broadway: one that people go to because they think it shows how erudite they are (Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead might have been one year's such play). I wonder if this is something similar.

I really liked the production.

The crowd on opening night was quite different from the typical opera crowd, for what it's worth. Like I said, more young people and more weird hair colors than usual. Not sure it's enjoyable enough to really be a "hit", as you say.

Further adventures: the HD on November 18 is sold out in all Manhattan venues* so we will be going to a movie theater in the Bronx, near Co-op City, to see it.

*I'm not sure if this is proof that it's the snob hit of the year, or if it's just being shown in fewer theaters.

Isn’t part of the issue that the rest of this years season is kind of uninteresting?

Yes. We're not going to anything else except . . .

Well, Im stoked for the Requiem.

this. I'll bet you buy much better seats than we (and our friend with whom we go) do, so I doubt I'll see you there.

All my tickets are balcony or family circle. I sit in orchestra for rush tickets every once in a while.

I get somewhat better seats for the ABT season but theyre like half the price for the same seats, plus I care more about my view for that.

I can't speak to the issue of sound; never sat down there. But sightlines I know. How far on the side? They use the whole stage, side to side and Quite far back. If you can't see it all, you might miss something interesting.
