An equivalent patty at Pino costs about $5 retail. Add fries, bun, etc. and with usual NYC markups you get minneta prices. Now think what you're eating when you pay half...

And yet I'm still alive. Golly.

Safety is not the issue.

Well, someone has to start this thread, and I did go last night, but it took Significant Eater longer than expected to arrive, so I was content with an aperitif and a glass of Pet Nat, and 5 delicious

By the time this thread peters out,I think that Frenchette may have a burger on the menu...

In keeping with a long-standing tradition on MFF, this response is obligatory:   Having been to neither The Grill or Frenchette, I can unequivocally state Frenchette is certainly more "Mad Menesque"

This is another instance where restaurant food is like pop music.

Some people just try to go for the LCD and try to make a lot of money.

Some people try to pursue their vision (within a broadly populist framework -- but not always at the populist end of it).

Some of the broad LCD stuff is great (Phil Spector, ABBA). Some is horrible ("Hitchin' a Ride").

Some of the "pursue their vision" stuff is great (Lou Reed). Some is horrible (I'll let you fill this in).

But on the whole, the great "pursue your vision" stuff is the best.

I'm confused. Aren't you the same guy who said

I don't actually know what a handbasket is -- but whatever they are, singer-songwriters are in the first ones going to hell.

Well, you know, the corollary is that terrible banal "pursue your vision" stuff is the worst. (I certainly like the 1910 Fruitgum Company more than Aztec Two-Step.)

(Anyway, at the height of the '70s singer-songwriter boom, most of the singer-songwriters weren't following their visions. They were following James Taylor's (ugh) and Joni Mitchell's visions. I.e., they were LCD guys.)

Thanks for the explanation. I have always tried to avoid listening to singer-songwriters. Except for Caroline Shaw and her ilk--an extension of the term "songwriter" beyond the pop stuff you reference. Although I'm not that fond of, say, Gabriel Kahane.

I'm just hoping for 10 pages before anyone has a meal here.

(though to be honest, 2 friends with good food knowledge like it a lot).

Lex managed over 50 messages on the MT thread without ever having eaten there. Do you think he can beat the record discussing a non-existent burger at Frenchette?
