Wilfrid
Couldn't they design the tournament such that there isn't a game for third place? we must maximize the number of times england can lose. Are you Australian?

Anthony Bonner
Modric still in it! Brazil looks better than they have in 20 years. France given injuries is just incredible. Injured: A Balon d'Or winner, the best defensive midfielder in the world, multiple Center Backs that could start for almost any team in the world, and Pogba.
StephanieL
Now that was an upset today. Too bad it got decided on penalty kicks.

I found it fitting, given how much Livakovic has meant for Croatia's success thus far. He gets big at the right times.

Steve R.
Somewhat tangential, but I might as well say it here. The one thing that prevents me from really enjoying soccer/football is that, when there is a tie after OT, they resort to another game penalty kicks to resolve it. Maybe basketball should decide ties with free throws or maybe baseball with a home run derby? Why cant they just emulate hockey and remove players from the field one by one every several minutes until a goal is scored?

Fortunately, in hockey they revert to sudden death for the playoffs.
Anthony Bonner
I get the complaint- but also limited substitutions is such a part of the game and at the end of 120 minutes players have run 10-15 miles and they are just exhausted. Quality of play really becomes an issue. Those other sports have unlimited substitutes. Also there is more skill to PKs than is often granted.
mongo_jones
penalty shootouts involve a lot of skill and psychology and are very exciting.

Steve R.
So is the game that they played for 2 hours. As you both can guess, I was not happy for it to end this way. Regardless, what comebacks for France. Overall, a thrilling game, especially in OT.

I liked the old method better. In fact I think they should have used that instead of playing.
mongo_jones
was there just one official feed? we watched on youtube tv (with 4k). i don't know if they didn't show it or i just missed it in all the tension but the argentine goalie's shenanigans during the penalty shootout were quite something. he got a yellow between the 3rd and 4th kick! Anthony Bonner
very entertained to see lots of casual American fans cheering for Argentina - yes some very fairly for Messi, but many of them out of a dislike for the French (not the French team, the French). While Argentina is a team that other than Messi is sort of infamous for being one of the kings of shithousery - diving, tactical fouling, ref baiting. Exactly the kind of stuff that Americans claim makes the sport unwatchable. A great game. The bad guys won, but Deschamps's changes were great and almost pulled it back after being just totally beaten for 70 minutes. I thought that first DiMaria penalty was soft, but Argentina very deservedly were up big. The beauty of their second goal made up for how much of a diver DiMaria is. I just wish Messi (I've always been a Messi guy, not a CR7 guy) didn't beat the French to get there. God the French have so much depth. So much youth. So hard to win tournaments but they have be the favorite in '26 already.
