joethefoodie
I heard stories of my grandfather bringing home live carp and keeping it in the bathtub in the Bronx, until it was ready to meet its maker - i.e. my grandmother, who even a carp would be afraid of. Sneakeater
Most NYC restaurants have live rats.
Wilfrid
there’s quite a few live poultry places left in brooklyn, the one that’s closest to me smells so bad that eating something that came from that building is inconceivable. Yes, and the other boros, although I think the one near the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge in Manhattan did close. Live frogs readily available in Chinatown.
voyager
Some years ago I was visiting my mother. She had just had her kitchen painted by an "old world craftsman". He was a great painter and super nice guy. He went hunting the weekend after he finished the work. New to this country, he wasn't aware of our laws, much less mores. He brought my mother, as a gift, 30 plucked songbirds. She declined, saying she didn't know how to cook them, so he came over and cooked for her. (I left before dinner was served.) Wilfrid
Yum. I had a schoolteacher, old as the hills, claimed to have caught and dressed sparrows for dinner as a kid (UK). He must have been a kid circa 1900.
