They’ve explicitly said they took them and other things off the menu for reasons of expense.  The menu is MUCH more limited now than upon reopening,

At least since I started going in the ‘80s, they had NEVER before not had clam bellies.  They never were seasonal then (I have no idea where the bellies came from).

I don’t have a problem with it, either. My problem is with speaking derisively of the older, clearly superior dining culture.

Fresh seafood used to be sold from street carts.

That's why he needed all those apples!

Oh wait.  I see the source of the confusion here.  What G&T serves as "clam bellies" aren't the fried clam bellies you get at the beach in New England in the Summer.  It's a different preparation using a different protein.

G&T's "clam bellies" are (or sob WERE) soft-shell clams (i.e., steamers) taken out of the shell and broiled with some other stuff.

Oh, no! They were the best!

Also, a really great wedge salad. Which I didn't think could ever be really great.

Just asking to be made to feel old, I suppose. Looks like I was last there over 20 years ago.

I last went when the "Sensation" show was on at the Brooklyn MoA, so I guess that's either last summer or probably the summer before. A lovely place, which needs to be preserved. The food can be a little rich - lots of butter and cream - but it's good to see historic dishes like Oysters Jim Brady actually being made and enjoyed.

Indeed the fishmonger at the GAP Greemarket is selling steamers right now.  So soft-shell clams MUST be available somewhere fairly close.

Each "New England" state has different regulations on soft-shell clams (which is the classic Ipswich clam belly clam). In Maine, the season is year-round. In Massachusetts, not so much. In the Pacific, they're now an invasive species.

Is there a season in New York?  I always assumed that the steamers I had growing up on the water on Long Island were local.  (And of course we know that the steamers sold at the Greenmarket are required to be local -- just like their February Moriches Bay shad is.)

Seasons

  • Bay scallops may be taken only from the first Monday in November through March 31.
  • All clams, oysters, mussels and other scallops may be taken throughout the year.
