Nix Pastel, too expensive (we were north of $600 for two last fall). Maybe Fantome as the more casual sister? Candide looks really nice but haven't been. CCeP probably pushes you too high as well.

joe beef reservations in for the second night of the trip. and happily it looks like my montreal friends will join me at damas. it's their favourite place post-hotel herman apparently; and they report that on their last trip they did indeed eat "the chef's tasting menu". now to hope everything keeps coming up milhouse and the group takes my l'express recommendation for the first night.

okay, on to toronto planning (in a separate thread soon).

ended up at l'express for our first meal tonight. just excellent. i was at a table of five and we got everything to share (sorry sneak!). highlights included the octopus and lentil salad, the chicken liver pate, a simple salad of giant asparagus, the boudin noir, a rabbit special, the veal kidneys, the rum baba and the creme brulee.

that sounds like a complicated salad!

the poutine dressing ties it all together.

lunch today was a lot of oysters at jean-talon. dinner will be at joe beef--after a lot of hand-wringing i decided to keep the reservation after all.

re damas: had a nice dinner there last night. my friends and i got a bunch of things to share. it's their favourite restaurant in town and they eat there often. i let them pick the dishes--the constraint was that i had had a pre-dinner meal at agrikol with the rest of the group i am traveling with and so we decided to not get heartier dishes. it was still very good though. my favourite dish was either the borek jibne or the akhtabout (warm octopus salad). the fattouch and the labneh zeitoun were very good too.
