Nice

Recommended Posts

There maybe a topic on Nice already? But it's a hard word to search for at least with my limited technical skills.

Don't go to Chantecler. A little run down now that the old lady who owned the Negresco has died.

The usual sort of natural wine bars are pretty decent: La Part Des Anges is good, and does some decent charcuterie in a very convivial and relaxed atmosphere.

La Merenda is excellent: cheap bouchon type place doing uncompromising provençal and niçois dishes: one wine, cash only, no phone.  The main courses on my visit were tripe, andouillette and daube provençale, very good starters of fried courgette flowers, ratatouille and that sort of thing. All very correct within the parameters of the dishes and the traditional methods used.

Par chance, did you go to the best resto in the world while you were in that neck of the woods ?

I have serious French foodie friends going there later this month and they would be quite interested in a recent report, methinks.

They had reserved prior to the announcement but the day Mauro was crowned world champ, this friend texted me to say that it looks like he's now headed to the best resto in the world ... he seemed very happy about this

No I didn’t : I went at short notice and it was full even though it was not yet anointed.

Sorry to hear that about Chantecler. We haven't been to Nice in a very long time, but have fond memories of dining there when it was really spectacular.

I've only had his food when he was visiting Manresa. It was excellent and obviously from the best restaurant in the world except maybe Le Chateaubriand.

I'm not trying to defend Mirazur at all because in fact when my friend told me he was going I sarcastically said that at least he and his wife will have a lovely view if the food isn't up to snuff ... and this is a guy who is going 99% for the food.

That said, a MAJOR aspect of the resto is the garden right outside the door (especially in this season), so a visiting chef without his products, spices, oils, citrus, well-tuned and familiar kitchen and team etc etc just isn't the same thing.

This is why it is unbelievably rare that I go to any of these visiting chef events ... I prefer the real deal

I usually avoid them for those reasons, but this was at least the third time he cooked there, so he knew the kitchen and the produce.

Topping that list is great for the bottom line but man does it do a number to your message board reputation.

Being that he's returned to Manresa, I wonder if the whole time he's there he's complaining about that awful California product?

And the following morning, he sent me a bunch of pics from the meal

All very pretty and colorful and very Instagrammable sans aucun doute as if that's any surprise

But food is about eating and tasting too ... or at least so says Chambo ... and M. Pigeon !

And he says that after sleeping on it, his opinion is unchanged … the place is to be AVOIDED !

Why ?

Service issues, unimpressive product (to him), errors in cooking, lack of seasoning …

But don’t take my words for it … here’s his …
