Theatre and Concert Etiquette

Recommended Posts

As a performer, I hate audience members taking pictures and videos.  Flash is often used, which is a real distraction, but even the lights on the phone that come on when someone is taking a pic or shooting a video are distracting in their own way. And as is noted in the article, it's also matter of consent.  We (the chorus) don't even get concert recordings for our own enjoyment because that violates some agreement the orchestra has about recordings, but no one at the venues ever does anything about people popping out the cell phones which is about as unauthorized as it gets.

If the lady sitting behind me hadn't stopped humming along to Der Rosenkavalier a little bit into the first vocal scene, I think I'd have punched her.

I got knocked around watching obituary, which hasn’t happened in years. I don’t think punching anyone would have made it better.
