In Home Of Original Sriracha Sauce, Thais Say Rooster Brand Is Nothing To Crow About

Quote

"It's not tasty," she says, taking a sip of water. "It's not mixed together properly. There's only one taste." Saowanit says a proper Sriracha sauce needs to be what Thais call klom klom — the hotness, the sour, the sweet and the garlic all blending together seamlessly, none overpowering the other. The American version, she says, just brings heat.

As the resident Philistine, I like Rooster sauce.   But willing to learn as well as chase wild geese, I'll see if I can source Sriraja Panich and report back.

That's what I'll be saying all week, soon, at the Jersey shore, where the house gin will be Kirkland. Of whose "natural botanicals" I remember only one, juniper, one flat flavor note.

Note to self: bring liquor more like a clarinet, so I'm not stuck with the pound-foolish pennywhistle.

FWIW, I rattled every cage on Clement Street and couldn't find Sriraja Panich.     80% Rooster, 20% your brand.

But only by the quart which is kind of large for an unested bottle.

Other glasses plus one mise-en-place bowl, but no wine glasses.  We're not drinking enough wine for that to happen.

The boy broke a glass and a vase. The adults have been responsible (which is surprising because the spouse typically breaks one or two a year)

Two wine glasses, a bowl, a spoon was in the blender when I turned it on, and the other day I dropped a pretty full bottle of olive oil on the floor. The bottle didn't break (thankfully), but the wooden floor has a nice bruise where the bottle landed.

More Thai stuff arrived at my front door...

And in my first foray into a brick & mortar shop (other than Essex Market), over on Grand Street, between Bowery and Chrystie...

To purchase herbs (and eggplant) which I believe to be, from top left:

Thai basil

Rau răm

Red perilla

Birds eye chilies

Fun times ahead!

Yikes!   Have you already gone through the sriracha you received July 29 ?
