What season is it again?

Diamondback

1-1/2 oz. Rye

3/4 oz. Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy

3/4 oz. yellow Chartreuse

Pour into cocktail shaker.  Add ice.  Stir.  Strain into chilled Old Fashioned glass.  Garnish with a cocktail cherry (my Amarena Fabbri cherries, while sweet to a fault -- vg in this drink -- as far as I can tell have no chemical ingredients).

I won't lie:  I made myself a double (it's already being a tough work week).

Have you ever had (why am I even asking this?) a Marconi Wireless?  Quite good. (only because when we were on the cape last week, we hiked the site of Marconi's actual radio installation in South Wellfleet).

I'm still trying to remember the drink Alex made over a decade ago at D & C, with Laird's Bonded, and garnished with an apple slice. I suppose I should crack open the book.

I went to a local crafts fair today and scored 3 vintage coupe glasses for $9 total.  So we enjoyed a Twentieth Century in them in the backyard this afternoon. 1 1/2 oz. gin 3/4 oz. Lil

I need better supervision.

A cocktail worthy of having given its name to most important bar of our time, the Pegu Club: Pour 2 oz. Gin (Monkey 47!) and 3/4 oz. each of Curaçao and lime juice, with 1 dash each of Angostura

Some new coupes arrived in the mail (I do break coupes). They were a little smaller than expected, but filling my jigger with water to experiment I was relieved to see that my standard size cocktail will fit in them.

There was no question of me making a smaller cocktail.

From the Trader Vic's book, the Caribbean Hot Swizzle: 1/2 lime (we used lime juice), 1 tsp. sugar, 1 1/2 oz. dark Jamaican rum (we only had Cruzan's Blackstrap), and enough hot water to fill the drinking vessel of your choice.

So sue me, we got these at Costco during our usual use-up-the-credit-card-reward splurge: https://www.amazon.com/Rocks-Cocktails-variety-bottles-Proof/dp/B07RD8QY8M/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8.  I've only tried the Aviation; it wasn't bad, even though it doesn't contain real creme de violette.

We also got a mixed 24-can pack of decent beer for only $36.

From Drinking the Devil's Acre, I present the Cable Car, a Sidecar variant:

  • Lemon wedge and cinnamon sugar
  • 1 1/2 oz. spiced rum
  • 1/2 oz. orange curacao
  • 1 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. simple syrup

Dampen the rim of a coupe or cocktail glass with the lemon wedge, then coat with the cinnamon sugar.  Pour the rum, curacao, lemon juice, and simple syrup into a mixing glass, add ice, and shake and strain into the glass. Garnish with an expressed orange peel.

Last Word

For some reason, it's been a while since I've had one.

God I love this cocktail!

You don't need the recipe, but we're supposed to give them, so:

3/4 oz. Gin

3/4 oz. Maraschino liqueur

3/4 oz. green Chartreuse

3/4 oz. lime juice

Shake.  Garnish with a cocktail cherry.

What's funny is that looking at the specs with a modern lens, you'd see that and think "oh that'll be too sweet." But yeah, it's just so crazygood.

Ooh, I'll need to try that.  I made a classic Martinez a couple of nights ago:

1 1/2 oz. gin
3/4 oz. sweet (Italian) vermouth
1/4 oz. maraschino liqueur
2 dashes orange bitters
Expressed lemon peel to garnish

Pour all the ingredients into a shaker, add ice, stir until well mixed, and strain into a coupe or cocktail glass.

Now please shoot me, by all means, but I am rarely ordering the Last Word in bars these days because the lime juice is way too much. I make it at home with a modest squirt (or “expression”) of lime or lemon. The lime takes over at the prescribed proportion.
