Wilfrid
Three very good shows in the Chelsea galleries right now. Sean Scully’s “Duane Street” at Lisson has a valedictory air. The large front room is packed with large, dizzying abstracts from the early 1980s; in the back room some recent works (two from this year) seem to look back on the earlier creations. Through end of January next year. Serra, of course, said his farewells earlier this year. Joni Moysent Weyl has an extensive show of his rigorously monochrome prints. I remember seeing his work with big black paint sticks at MoMA a few years ago; one of my artist friends summed them up in one word, “Strong.” Like his sculptures these deep black spaces seem to change the air around you. Likely to be extended to end of year. And an artist at the peak of her powers, Kara Walker in a very big show at Sikkema Jenkins. Huge works packed with collages cutouts; figures in brilliant motion. I haven’t seen her working in sculpture before, but four amazing busts might be the highlight of the show. Closes December 14.
