Corner stores

we were at the checkout counter and i saw this guy had something that suspiciously looked like ramps but hubby was already halfway out the store and i didn’t want to say “wait a minute, i have to check this out.”

my old corner store sold loosies, a guy out front sold far more addictive substances, and it was the set of a Rhianna photoshoot.

FWIW, Baldor wholesaling ramps at $30/lb right now....

Even $25. They have the ones from Rick Bishop which are just excellent right now.

Not a full supermarket, but has a bigger selection (and is usually nicer) than a NYC bodega.  And in SF, you get the full complement of alcohol offerings.

Roz, I was being somewhat coy.    While SF actually is papered with a reasonable small store at seemingly every corner, I used the term to refer to an excellent home-own supermarket within 2 blocks of my house.   We actually have two fine markets on one block.    Lucky.

An anecdote:    Some 50 years ago when we were first looking for a house, finding SF expensive, we checked out Mill Valley in Marin.   I told our realtor that we wanted something "downtown", in the old town.    She showed us a half dozen lovely places out in the woods, up the mountain, extolling how dear and other wildlife frequented the backyards.    Exasperated, I finally asked her where was the "corner store".    She blinked, looked confused and repeated, "Corner store?"     I told her that I now lived on top of Russian Hill and could walk down hill in any of three directions and come to a corner store.     She looked at me and replied, "My dear, I don't think you're ready for Mill Valley."      Wasn't then, am not now

I think of, in NYC, a corner store as what others might call a bodega.

Is there just a really good supply this year. A friend IMed me that there was some street vendor on Elizabeth and Hester (i.e. the heart of Manhattan Chinatown) selling them for the ridiculous price of $7...a pound!! Which to me sounds like they are just raping the area where they found them.

It sounds as though you are talking walking distance. If that’s the definition, we have no corner stores near our house. Loads of places to shop but all require a car ride as short as 5 minutes or as long as 15 minutes.  As for our Manhattan apartment, going by @joethefoodie’s definition, we certainly have bodegas (one is directly across the street), but I rarely use them. In fact, when we stay in the city I make it my business not to do any shopping and bring whatever we need with us from NJ. I’m sure you can guess why.

The equivalent in German cities is run by a Turkish family and sells good quality fruit and vegetables, plus basics (pasta, milk, snacks, etc) and a surprising number of Turkish ingredients. If you are lucky they also sell appetisers to take away, like grape leaves, olives, salads, dips, lahmacun and various stuffed breads. Mine is two blocks away and was an absolute lifeline during the lockdown as they continued to carry a lot of the things larger supermarkets kept running out of. They also sell liquor, but no pork products. I still do my late afternoon Saturday shopping there when I've forgotten something or other.

there’s one two blocks from my house and good for random vegetable staples (onions, celery, carrots), fruit juices or sandwiches.

for the places we shop - like the one mentioned by @voyager , we have to travel. we try to avoid our neighborhood safeway because of certain kinds of drama that always seem to occupy center stage.
