One fun thing about having a five-year diary is that I can see at a glance it snowed in New York January 6 last year too.

But when it snowed in 2024 it was the first time something like 330+ days. In this case it's been about 16 days.

The central question is whether there will be snow next Monday when I need to get outta here.

I thought this was going to be a thread about snow but hoping our LA friends are safe from fire @hollywood

I'm safe (thanks).  Friends in Santa Monica have packed a bag and are on alert for an evacuation order. Friends in Altadena have evacuated to the south of Pasadena.  I'm just hearing a lot of wind, sirens and breathing very, very smoky air.

We have been socked in with ice and snow and frigid temps since the weekend. It isn't warming up soon, so snow isn't budging. Things have been shut down all week. Not a happy camper. I miss SoCal despite the fires. Hollywood and others, please be safe!

Winds have died down. But friends in Burbank and LaCanada have evacuated.

One of my students asked for an extension on her assignments due to the fact that she's mid-evacuation, and I think that's a good excuse!

My friends who evacuated from Altadena went back to their home today.  The home was on fire. It will be a total loss!  These fires ain't playin'.

I don't know why these particular fires seemed so surreal to me. I think I never imagined fire ravaging such a populated place. Ridiculous, I know, flammable is flammable, but there it is.

You’re right.   Urban fires used to be single dwellings, hastily put out by city firefighters.    But these wind-driven fires are wildfires, leaping rooftop to treetop.   Friends in Santa Monica are panicked about their several blocks lined with palm trees, ready to act as matches.

I've heard from several friends who have evacuated and as of yesterday evening were anxious to know if they had a place to return to.

Tired of weather.

Meanwhile, we live in relative sunny calm, awaiting next week's atmospheric river and possible mudslides. Ah, weather!

Weather I am so over it like can't we have a different way to signal what season it is like the sky is orange for spring and this white stuff on the ground is pretty for fifteen minutes then it's studded with dog poop and a death trap and can I go to the store a block away without wearing three sweaters and ugh.

Bah humbug. Here we go again. Expecting 4-8 inches today. And frigid temps with deadly wind chills.

I am still sore after having to dig the car out on Monday afternoon. Even my hands ache from gripping the shovel.

It's raining steadily in LA.  It's a bit of a shock since we haven't had any rain for a year.  We await the inevitable hillside collapses.

Las Vegas is having its first measurable rain in 215 days today.

There were some mudslides. Now the atmospheric river is gone. The Santa Ana winds are a distant memory. The captain has taken off the fasten seatbelts sign.

NEVER unbuckle your seatbelts while on a plane, regardless of what the captain says.   There's always some kind of turbulence just off the horizon.

I'm feeling that way when I sit on my couch watching TV.
