Hamilton Heights and neighboring districts

Recommended Posts

A thread to dump remarks about my neighborhood.

There are by any measure enough bars on and around Broadway in the 140s, but more keep opening. The Vale Public Bar, late summer; Bless, almost opposite, a few weeks ago.

Dropped into The Vale. It turns out to be a Scottish bar with Scottish owners. And Dominican staff, including kitchen,of course.

Menu highlights, an odd take on kedgeree, fried Mars Bars, curry sauce, deep fried pizza and chips. I am back in Glasgow.

Have not tried any; must come back when I am hungry and don’t need clear skin.

Bless looks like a Latino bar, but no guarantees.

A sequence of events led me to Mama Sushi on Broadway 146th/147th last night.

I had visited the Cloisters with a friend, after which we went looking for lunch in the neighborhood. We past a branch of Mama Sushi (a mini-chain) and the long-serving Dominican Mamajuana, where I haven't been for years. But we wanted something simple and ended up with pub food at The Park View.

We finished lunch, or whatever it was, after 4pm (because we talk a lot). When I got home, full of burger, I thought -- maybe skip dinner. Have some cheese later on. But after a couple of cocktails, I found myself very slightly hungry.

Having had Mama Sushi put in my mind, I headed to the local one and ordered an appetizer and a roll. Lamb lollipops -- two chops (I think $20 which isn't bad for lamb chops).

Then -- and you can't make this up -- from their long and eclectic selection of fusion rolls, the Mamajuana: Bacalao, Cream Cheese, Yuca Fries, Avocado, Sweet Plantain. It was fine, and there was more of it than I expected.

This is kinda called "drunk eating."

New York 1 reporting on major raids and arrests of gang members just four minutes walk from me on West 152nd (they say, actually at a business on Broadway).

But the real problem is they keep saying it’s in Washington Heights. New York 1!
