It was funny tho.

Dinner today was a Côte de boeuf reverse seared, with rhubarb chutney, sweet potato fries, and grilled radicchio with a maple/apple vinegar/pumpkin oil dressing, crumbled roquefort and toasted sunflower seeds cuz I ran out of hazelnuts.

Working my way through some Indian recipes from a not very good book - an experiment in seeing what works and what doesn't. The night before last I turned my kitchen into a post-hurricane site with a

Ta. I must give this a try.

Thank you thank you. But doesn't everyone look better wearing a bath mat?

sunday dinner:

slow-roasted boneless pork loin (from the joy of cooking, 1997 edition, pages 688-689); fagiolini in umido (green beans braised in tomato sauce). grapes and parmigiano cheese for dessert.

i prefer vegetables like the cauliflower from a few posts ago and tonight’s green beans cooked until super soft. the sauce started with one large onion, sliced, and fried in 1 tbsp. lard until golden, then i stirred in some canned crushed tomatoes and half a can of water. salt, pepper and a forlorn sprig or two of basil. added trimmed green beans and romano beans, then braised over low heat, covered, until done.

On a relatively calm weather day, N broke out the grill and made seared Niman Ranch strip steak, grilled garden vegetables (mostly summer squash and eggplants), and cubed potatoes (also from our garden) cooked in duck fat in the cast-iron pan.  South African wine to drink: 2019 Spier Discover Collection blend (70% pinotage/30% shiraz).

Note: okra does not take well to being grilled.

Maybe grilling over gas doesn't work so well.  (N didn't want to use the wood-burning side of our grill.)  Next time, she should cook the okra in the cast iron pan along with the spuds.

This started out as a salad, but I realized I'd be hungry again in about 90 seconds, so I added some pasta. Squid, red onion, celery, and some upstate garden vegetables. You'll note that I am significantly better at growing green beans and cucumbers than I am at growing carrots. Those are the big ones. And what I thought was a ridiculous amount of dill in the dressing turned out to be the exact right amount of dill, so yay.

Been a while since I made pizza, and since I had dough in the freezer, it was a quick weeknight meal. The only drawback was the tomato, which was a fancy heirloom (probably Green Zebra) and too sweet for pizza. Also, I've lost my ability to make a circle. But the dough was very acquiescent, so I was able to make it super thin. Matzoh pizza!

One of the professional pizza gurus admonished, "Never trust a round pizza."

I'm sick with the flu.  I could've gotten a flu shot when I was at the pharmacy last week.  But i didn't, cuz I'm a self-destructive moron.  So now I'm sick with the flu.

I figured that Kathy Chan's Grandma's Vietnamese Eggplant with Garlic and Fish Sauce over rice would be a perfect sick food, as it's essentially a bowl of highly flavored mush.  Was I right?  I was right!

No wine duh.

Pawpaw for dessert (more mush)!
