There are so many food blogs, which ones do members allocate their limited time to read or check in with periodically?   I enjoy Pim's blog chez pim   There are 3 Seattle based food blogs that I'm

why is this different from any other reviewer/critic?

Thanks for mentioning my blog guys.   As to the value of review type blogs. I remember not that long ago Steve P talking about that there was nothing new to write about in certain food catagories.

I'm not talking about gossip. I'm talking about consumer journalism.

Now that you mention it, it seems Consumer Reports is more deferential than it used to be. At least it seems to embrace high end cars (and other products) now, whereas it had a more puritanical attitude toward them in the past.

i confess i only really had food and drink journalism in mind. maybe it has to do with the immediacy/intimacy of the thing being reviewed--a drink in your glass, food on your plate.

I think it has something to do with the direct and appealing nature of the comping.

I think it reflects their increasingly affluent readership. They *do* make a point of singling out premium brands (of all products) who don't deliver superior performance. The fact that they don't rely on advertising and pay for their test goods helps to keep them objective.

that's part of what i mean. it's also a chef coming to your table asking about the food he cooked for you. it's a master blender at a show pouring you the whisky they made and sending you a personal sample. a car no one's giving you and there's no one who has made it.

Mongo, since I know nothing about the whiskey world let me ask you a question. Many political journalists suck up to their sources based on the idea that they'll get superior access and inside information.

Does anything like that happen in the whiskey world between producers and bloggers? Perhaps compliant bloggers get samples of nearly impossible to obtain rare blends or something of that sort?

Of course political journalists sometimes suck up for the sheer egotistical joy of being on friendly terms with the powerful. I assume some whiskey bloggers do the same.

compliant bloggers get samples of very cheap whiskies. what's embarrassing about all this is how little people are willing to receive in exchange for access/proximity.

more prominent bloggers (not very many) get invited on junkets etc..

Yes, makes sense.
