Happy 40th birthday. 

I just got an email from them asking me to share a favorite memory and win a glass of "bubbly" on the house. 

My favorite memory has to be the August 4, 2009 review by Frank Bruni where he took a star away, simply because it followed my July 20 piece in the Pink Pig that shared many of Bruni's complaints -- not least the appalling duck confit.

I guess my favorite memory has to be the time when my college roommate's dad took us to USC for dinner, and I got a little too exuberant and flung my wine into the ashtray, extinguishing dad's (probably 8th) cigarette. Dunno what I ate, but the embarrassment has stayed with me.

If it's 40 years old, I sure wasn't living here when they opened.  I do remember it being not necessarily the first or second 'nice" restaurant I went to with a date after moving back here in '94 to go to cooking school (I think the first was Bouley, and I was taken there by someone, maybe even to celebrate graduation), and probably enjoying myself.
