Just finished last month's Vanity Fair in which an interviewer listens sympathetically to Kathy Bates explain her long awareness that she didn't have typical Hollywood actress looks and would never have been a romantic lead. Four pages of sympathy.

Then they put Scarlett Johansson on the cover and give her 12 pages. Guess which one is an Oscar winner.

I understand the decision, but didn't it make anyone cringe? Could have been avoided by running the Bates story in the new issue with the Pedro Pascal cover.

That's not a bug; it's a feature.

I get it; I just don't "get" it.   Blimp boobs are so ubiquitous that they're no longer eye-catching.   Maybe I'm just not the target audience but in IMHO, "BORING!"

You're not, and I'm not, and to be honest, I can't figure out why ANYONE is the target audience for "blow-up doll" aesthetic, but here we are.

Eh, she's fine.

But did you read the story? When younger, she was told "You're no Michelle Pfeiffer." She still remembers that. Now she's no ScarJo.

No, but I know exactly what that refers to - Bates was in a production of Frankie & Johnny (which I saw), and Pfeiffer was cast in the movie version. Bates is actually a much better choice, because Frankie is supposed to be unpretty and insecure. But that's Hollywood, baby.

A similar thing happened with Amadeus. Tim Curry, who was awesome in the play, was replaced by Tom Hulce in the movie version because Curry was deemed too old to play Mozart onscreen (probably because he was).

If he touches The New Yorker, everyone will walk out. Look at WaPo.

I think you are correct! Did Tina Brown's editorship of the NYer cause a lot of exoduses?

@small h Correct about Frankie & Johnny.

My recollection is that the New Yorker rebellion was against Gottlieb and Brown settled things down. But an annoying editor can be more easily fired than an annoying owner.
