The great, great frontman of the Pogues (when it wasn't Joe Strummer). At 65.

Probably be hearing Fairytale of New York even more this Christmas season.

RIP, Shane.

I'm sure I did, but it actually goes back further. I knew him before he was in a band. We used to go to the same gigs, notably Eddie and the Hot Rods. Nobody expected the skinny, gangly kid in the patterned shirts to become a star. I also knew him later when the Pogues used to play on the same bill as a band my friend managed.

The link above is to "A Rainy Night in Soho" which is what I am playing this morning.

Correction, it was Shane's pre-Pogues band The Nips that supported my friend's band. And my friend just reminded me that he lost part of a tooth when Shane accidentally and drunkenly headbutted him backstage at one gig.

Interesting fact: Shane formed two consecutive bands that ended up editing their names to be less controversial. The Nipple Erectors became The Nips and Pogue Mahone, of course, The Pogues (kiss my arse to the kisses).
