Well, I made my best guess and it worked out. Doors opened at 7, I showed up at 8.30, saw about the last half of the support's set; Lindsay and Gibbs set up fast and were on at 9.30.

I did like The Sultan Room, part of that weird Turk's Inn complex: good sound, good sight lines, pleasant bartenders.

Lindsay and Gibbs were marvellous. I've never seen Lindsay live; even more than on recordings, the extreme contrast between his sweet voice and poetic lyrics and the Derek Bailey guitar really hits home. Mix of English and Portuguese songs and a couple of raging improvised instrumentals. After one of them, Gibbs could be heard amusedly asking Lindsay "What you gonna do next?"

Last week, Norah Jones at the Hammersmith Apollo. I know, I know, and I was not sure why I'd booked even before it started. I mean, I've never bought the new album. But as I'm sure I bored everyone wi

Going to see the Finn brothers in Central Park this evening. I assumed it would have sold out, but I got a message pushing half price tickets which I couldn't resist. Think it will piss down?

Saw the Cowboy Junkies again last night, in an ice cold Beacon Theater. They had to wind up a ninety minute set at 11pm - union rules - which is a pity, as I think the audience would have loved anoth

Does this belong under gigs? We caught Peter Grimes yesterday at the Bavarian Staatsoper, with Jonas Kaufmann and Rachel Willis Sørensen in the lead roles. First time I've seen this one, it has gotten mixed reviews, mainly in terms of the direction, but the music was gorgeous.

Going back to @Sneakeater's thing, we didn't pay much more for these tickets (7th row!) than we have for some pop concerts in significantly larger venues, where you mostly see stuff on a screen and of course amplified. This is crazy considering the production complexity, the number of top of their game musicians, set designers etc. and you are in a small enough room to be hearing and seeing the singers without any electronic intervention.

Also a fun night out in the sense that you're in a beautiful building with newly renovated bar super glossy backlit marble brass velvet etc everyone all dressed up. Kind of like being on the titanic...

Afterwards we stopped for a cocktail and something small to eat at Schwarzreiter, which is getting to be one of my favourite "grown up's night out" bars in the city.

Subway to and from, joined by Oktoberfest revellers and people coming back from a Bayern game. I love living here.

First time back at Cal Performances in nearly 3 years, to see the Soweto Gospel Choir.  N hadn't seen them in a long time, and I'd never seen them at all.  The first half featured South African songs and the second half featured songs by Black American artists.  Very energetic and engaging show.

Beth Orton at the Teragram Ballroom.  I had not seen her since, I think, 2015 in a brief appearance at a 60th anniversary celebration of "Howl" at the Ace Hotel.  In the meantime she has apparently experienced some seizures and had kids.  Her voice seems more raw.  Here's the setlist. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/beth-orton/2022/teragram-ballroom-los-angeles-ca-43bf976f.html

"Fractals" is the punchiest of the tunes she performed off her new record, Weather Alive.  On reflection, she is more melancholy then I recalled (is this the same woman who spiced up works by Red Snapper and the Chemical Brothers?).  "She Calls Your Name" and "Central Reservation" were the highpoints.

Opener with an electric cello was Heather Woods Broderick.  She has potential but has yet to realize it.
