Well, we need a thread for the rest of the entire world outside NYC, so here ya go.   What did you get at your farmers market? What did you get in your CSA box? Either will do: post it here!

The best day I have ever had at the Greenmarket for protein.

 

Herring fillets!

 

Flounder roe!

 

Pig cheeks!

 

Lamb heart!

 

A Delmonico steak in a one-person size for once!

 

A Sirloin Tip Roast that's small enough for one person to eat over time!

 

As for vegetables, I'm still at the point where I'm excited by the variety of root vegetables.

 

When I bought my brussells sprouts, I said knowingly to the farmer, "I'm told they're better after the first frost." She said she'd never heard that before today -- but that someone else had just told her the same thing 20 minutes ago. Another MFFer?

Naw. Everybody (else) knows that. She might have just been a hired hand from Bklyn who lives under a rock and doesn't patronize the cool restaurants.

 

[That's a joke; I've no idea if it's true. But it is a widely spread story. And not everyone who works at the market is actually the farmer.]

So Ray Bradley told me, with reference to his attempts to bring some rabbit meat to market, that he's been having trouble getting his rabbits to breed.

 

"They just run around each others in circles," he said. "Then they get tired and don't do anything."

 

"Don't they know they're rabbits?" I asked.

 

Ray said that he was thinking of trying some music to get them in the mood. I told him I heard that rabbits like Carl Stalling. But he's pretty set on Barry White.

So do you just pack your freezer with this stuff?
