Sneakeater
NOW there are decent strawberries.
Sneakeater
I don't think any leafy green has ever called out to me the way this bunch of spigarello did this morning.
Blondie
Can someone please give me a heads up if they see sour cherries? I completely missed them last year
Sneakeater
Which is odd because they just let in another cheesemonger. They appear to have executed the old cheesemonger.
bloviatrix
Can someone please give me a heads up if they see sour cherries? I completely missed them last year They should be around within the next week or so. I know that Battleview Orchards has them as part of their U-pick.

I’ll start clearing some space in the freezer and prepare myself to be covered in cherry juice for a few hours
Orik
Lost Bread Company is fantastic. I cannot believe how good this bread is. Their loaf with masa (I forget the name) is like everything that's good about sourdough and tortillas.
joethefoodie
Wow - I'll be on the lookout for that bread, as I've not tried it. All the way from Philadelphia. Must be the water. All this rain, in my mind, can't be good for strawberries, and I wonder its impact on local cherries, too (they may split).
small h
I got some cherries yesterday at Union Square from Caradonna, one of at least five vendors selling them. They're quite good. I also sampled strawberries from a few places and didn't think any of them were worth buying. Mountain Sweet Berry's were the best of a mediocre lot.

joethefoodie
Today at Thompkin's Square - nice strawberries, sour cherries, rhubarb, asparagus, swordfish, scallops, smoked bluefish, and a few other things, mostly green (dill, lettuces, etc.).
joethefoodie
While the strawberries were very nice and tasty, it cost me $14 to make a pint of sorbet and a pint of strawberry jam, - that's a lot! And while the strawberries were beautiful when I purchased them and started walking home with them, I erred in not immediately starting to work with them. By the time I got around to washing and hulling them in order to make said jam and sorbet, they weren't in the best of shape; they were, as a matter of fact, starting to look not good - so I really didn't get to use the full amount I had bought... My guess is that they're refrigerated after being picked, and then the heat of the day causes them to sweat profusely (like I was), leading to less than perfect fruit. Still - they were tasty. And the sorbet rocked.
