I'll start the ball rolling with the fingerling potatoes I bought at Tompkins Square yesterday. I am very bad at remembering the names of stalls, but there are only half a dozen or so here (open Sund

They make Hooligan (full stop) which some might call stinky. And mean that as a compliment.

Well, we need a thread for the rest of the entire world outside NYC, so here ya go.   What did you get at your farmers market? What did you get in your CSA box? Either will do: post it here!

I think he's pre-depressed.

But anyway, I  like this season - other than corn and tomatoes, there's not much that I might be missing. And fall greens are really good, as are the freshly harvested root vegetables (or at least more freshly harvested than in January/February).

I think the problem at least at my Greenmarket is that the vendors who disappear after Thanksgiving are winding down, so their remaining selections are getting disappointingly meager.

The difference between this week and last week was almost startling.

Yeah somewhat different at Union Square, where there were still tomatoes being sold.

i could not resist buying some of the straggler tomatoes, made for a quick supper last night - penne with sweet pepper and tomato sauce

anyway, cardone are available at our market. a member of the thistle family, they taste just like artichokes and have some underlying bitterness. they require a lot of prep and are an acquired taste. great in a gratin, or deep fried or as a parmigiana. one year we bought some and they were full of ants!!!!

Or some ants, for that matter.

My chorus rehearses in the Music building of Cal State East Bay. In the snack area, the vending machine that dispenses hot drinks had a hand-lettered sign on it saying "Dead Ants in Drinks!".  So come out here for all the ants you want. 🙂
